Microsoft Research just released a new free stitcher called ICE (Image Composite Editor).
It's available in both 32 and 64 bit flavors.
I just pulled the x64 version and tried a few projects that I had stitched with PTGui.
The first was a full spherical interior shot, and it choked. I don't think this tool is for 360 panos.
The second pano was just 3 regular shots from my Canon G9. They stitched just fine. Infact, they stitched cleaner in the preview window than APP did. APP showed multiple people in the same spot (that's how their preview usually works, then a final render removes the artifacted people).
Microsoft ICE removed them automatically, but I couldn't find many options to tweak. It's more a drag & drop and save type application.

I think Canon made it $2700 because they were third to announce behind Sony & Nikon.
That allowed them to set a more competitive price point, which I'm glad.

Well, this was directed at the Canon camp, not Nikon
Of course you wouldn't switch. Although when I heard that Nikon had video modes on their latest cameras, I was tempted to switch. Glad Canon added that functionality (since I've already invested quite a bit into Canon lenses)

Anyone have their pre-order in yet? I'll be doing mine soon. I just bought my 40D in January, and in November I'll have a replacement, although it will be a nice one
full frame, 21megapixels, live view, HD video! (yeah, that's a weird one but could be fun shooting with fisheye lenses)
I'll have to order the new Nodal Ninja 180 as well, since I won't need to shoot in portrait.

I'm the opposite, I don't like to fly, but I enjoy planes.
The WWII bombers are rare now, and even rarer if they're still flying, so eventhough I was shooting panos of them, I was blown away when they flew over.

Java always seemed clunky at best.
It's bulky, requires software to download, then has a resident app that checks for updates constantly.
There's also Microsoft's Flash killer (or so they're trying) Silverlight, which seems like Flash + Java (nice visuals and real programming abilities).
I'd like to support as many pano players/formats as possible, but I think it will end up giving the user information overload. For now, I've been staying with Flash (using krpano)

Since Apple can't get their act together to port to 64bit OS's, goodbye QT.
There's more innovation going on in the flash pano player world (momentum, lens flare, overlays).

Actually I didn't use the houses to level it. I always level out my primary shot, using my NN EZ-Leveler. That way I have a base point to work with when adjusting the other images.
BTW: The world isn't flat, and New England especially isn't

I added some red lines to show verticles on the houses in the background, which would be level.
Also, not how the woman's bag hangs level, and you can see the two angled lines on it, with how the weight is distributed.

Nikos,
Both panos have the following values for their krpano xml file
fisheye ="0.00" fisheyefovlink="0.00"
As for the panos being level, they are, zoom in on the houses in the background, they have straight vertical edges. The tents were setup on a hill, so everything looks like it's leaning, but I did level up my camera for the shots.

Thanks
I usually have nobody in my panos (at least the past 3 years of my panos) and as someone recently said it's the "neutron bomb" look (all the people are gone, it's a wasteland)
I find you really need to get in close to the detail with the fisheye (like at the cookie stand) to see all the good stuff. I shoot multiple shots at each turn of my pano head, so that I can go back and pull the best content, trying to have something interesting at every turn (so that the pano isn't lopsided).
That takes a conscious effort though, and sometimes I just shoot and hope for the best.
And remember, always ask permission before you start shooting. Most people (especially New Englanders) don't mind their picture taken, but they like to be asked. It also strikes up a conversation, and you might get some work out of it

My house test got 95% synthy. Sometimes the perspective is off on the matching points though.
photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=41311831-d09d-4e5b-b...
I noticed on the Weirs Beach shots, it was matching points based on mountains on the lake, but the close perspectives were completely wrong.
Still a neat concept program though.
