Another lens to consider would be the Sigma 15mm f/2.8 full frame FE. I've been happy with mine on the D700.

Lloyd,
I purchased a Canon G10 this past weekend. I was expecting to be blown away with all the 'hype' surrounding the quality of it's output. In a nutshell I'm going to return it tomorrow. I was very disappointed by the image quality (RAW). CA is VERY prominent even in less than high contrast situations. Overall sharpness is only average for a p+s.
As others have mentioned, at the same price, the lowly Nikon D40 is a far better alternative.

I have the manfrotto 190 and it's a bit too light-weight/small to handle your combination. Actually I wasn't all that happy using it with the NN3/D80 let alone the NN5L/D300.
I'd recommend going the next size up like the manfrotto 055 series, gitzo 320 series, etc. (ie. tripods with an upper leg diameter of 25mm or more)
For the past 2 years I've been using a Benro C257 carbon fiber tripod and it has been trouble free. It easily supports my NN5L/D700 and my film cameras (Fotoman 617, Deardorff 5x7). I mount everything on a Acratech ballhead.

Help with Flash pano

I'm in the process of converting my panos over to Flash.
I use a Mac so I don't have the variety of softwares available as Win users.
Anyways, I load an 8000x4000 (or sometimes 6000x3000) equirectangular tiff file into Pano2VR - then outputting to a flash file.
My Pano2VR Flash Output settings are:
cube face size: 1906 image quality: 75 sub tiles: 1
window size: 1140x520 frame rate: 50 render quality: 9
decrease quality while moving, change stage quality and change bitmap filtering are all checked 'on'.
output format: flash 9
Here's the url to my test pano:
tinyurl.com/5s6hw9
My question is when I scroll to the nadir or zenith, when zoomed out, why do the edges of the pano seem to 'jump' or 'step' back into alignment?
Thanks, Roger...

Thanks Rosauro! I'll check back with you in a couple of months. The NN5L has been working flawlessly but the other week I was doing a vr in a fairly dark interior and, as I now point my camera down 15 deg, I think having a lockable detent every 15 deg on the upper rail would make life a bit easier. ie. no flashlight OR reading glasses needed

Will there be an 'upgrade' price for those of us who have the NN5L?

Hans Nyberg said: If you also take zenith there is another much more important thing to look for. Your camera mount on the arm has to be perfect. Not tilted 1 degree up or down on the arm. Small errors for that will give you problems not with the images around but with the zenith.

Hans - interesting info.
For someone like myself I would normally tilt the camera down -5 or -10 deg for a smaller nadir hole. I also take a zenith shot. Generally this has worked well but once in a while a get a situation where my stitch has a small error or two. It's been easy enough to 'fix' but I'm always looking for ways to improve.
I initially 'found' my 'nodalpoint' with the camera set at 0 deg tilt but from my understanding of reading your info this may not be the best route?

For this example I would suggest first aligning just the 4 around plus zenith - don't include the nadir shot. PTgui should have no problems. Then once you've done that you can either a) output the result and then manually touch up the nadir cube face separately and reintegrate it or b) try adding the nadir and use viewpoint correction to align it to the rest of the pano.

Being that the Nikon 16mm utilizes all metal construction, this could certainly account for a part of that price difference? Is any plastic used in the Sigma?
Additionally, a photographer met with me recently that uses a shaved Tokina 10-17 on his full-frame camera (in this case a Canon). This is a very interesting option, as you can get the following range of results from using different zoom settings-
- a full circle fisheye image (widest setting) - a fisheye circle that extends to the top but with the sides cropped (middle zoom setting) - a full-frame fisheye image (full zoomed setting)
I can think of occasions where it would have been nice to be able to pick from one of these for any particular shot.
I'm sure there are plastics used in the Sigma lenses though I admit, on my 8mm, it's never been a concern. Ideally would prefer the Nikkor but having just blown the bank on the D700 I'm a bit tapped out.
The Tokina intrigues me and have found it locally for a decent price BUT after seeing the jpegs of the 'operation' I'm really leery of doing it.

I've been quite happily doing 360vrs with my cropped sensor Nikons using a Nikkor 10.5mm and lately a Sigma 8mm/3.5 lenses.
However I just bought a FF Nikon D700 and did a couple of tests this past weekend with the Sigma 8mm/3.5 lens.
For this test I shot 3 around at -5 deg pitch plus a zenith. Lens was set at a distance marking of 1m and used at f/11. No additional adjustments were done on the files.
www3.sympatico.ca/rogein/publicdownload/pano_test...
What I'm wondering is how I can improve the 'edge' quality? There's a lot more 'smearing' towards the edge field of view than I'm use to with my previous setups.
I realize that ideally I should probably be shooting with something like a 15mm or 16mm fisheye for better resolution on a FF sensor. But I've seen some 360vrs shot on a Canon 5D using the Sigma 8mm and there's none of the image smear I'm experiencing.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks! Roger...
