Sony A900 v. Canon 5D MkII

Hi Guys,
I am considering going full frame, and I am torn between the Sony A900 and the Canon 5D MkII. Has anyone any particular views on these cameras? I mostly take panos and wide angle shots.
The Canon has much less noise at high ISO, but I almost never go beyond ISO 800, of course if my system had low noise I might.
The Sony seems to have better bracketting capabilities, and the built-in sensor stabilisation means I can have the benefits with cheaper lenses.
In UK the Sony has a very clear price advantage at the moment, although that might change as Sony is about to up its prices.
I much appreciate the quality of views expressed in panoguide, any relevant comments?
Cheers,
Pete

I'd prefer to have some people in such a shot, it looks more natural.

Very good.
I could see the noise and a few discontinuities but they would be unnoticed and irrelevant to anyone other than a experienced photographer who was searching for flaws.
The main thing is that you captured the atmosphere and it was acceptably sharp and adequateley exposed.
Over the past year or so it seems to me, that the overall standard of panos has greatly improved. There have been lots of panos tackling difficult situations and doing well too

Pete

Hi,
Like most people here I use ACR CS3 for 95+% of my messing around incl. CA, but I find the Adobe filter, Lens Correction.8bf extremely useful at times.
I can not work out where this came from. Is it a standard filter that comes with CS3 or have I absorbed it from somewhere else? It is an amazingly convenient bit of software considering it's only 2k and is available whenever PS is open.

There seems to be a great business, (rip-off), opportunity here. Find a workshop that will machine down the lens for $10 AUD, (US$6), screw him down to US$3 for multiple orders, then offer the service to panoguide punters for US$100.
Has anyone tried the Sigma 10-20mm on a FF camera? I know it is designed for a 1.6 sensor and there would be serious vignetting but if shaved a bit it might be useable, with limitations, on a FF sensor. The design of the lens means that you could never get 180° FoV but I already have the lens and it would be much more cost effective than buying a completely new Fisheye for 5D MkII.
Cheers,
Pete

Great stuff Mark!
You captured the atmosphere perfectly, (I was out in Iran in the days of the Shah). I don't know how you managed to cope with such dark places and people walking around.
I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your Iran shots.

Hi Andrew, mediavets,
Cor, it's not every pano. guy who has a church named after them
I couldn't get www.panoguide.com/gallery/785/ to open.
You seem to have some interesting churches, pano material, nearby. As much as I find old churches interesting, I'm 100% aethiest. I also find Chinese temples fascinating too.

How about a pano of your village church. Although less grand than cathedrals I often find old village churches more interesting. Even a mundane pano is a wonderful record of our social history.

Hans,
I hate to admit it, because so many of your comments p*** me off, but you did a superb job capturing the crowd in the Silkeborg fireworks pano. The exposure was spot on and the expressions on the faces was great too. You definitely had the WOW factor. At night with so many people, Phew! they can be a tricky shots.
My only comment which might be seen as negative, but isn't, is that I'd love to see a fireworks pano take from much closer to the action so the fireworks were overhead, what a zenith that would make.
Cheers,
Pete

While I have to agree that this is not a "Q & A" and that there is more detail than I need to know, there should be a place within Panoguide where people can give information about problems they have had or are are having in the panoramic sphere.
"It has nothing to do with panoguide or any other community. I suggest you to never do such a thing again.
I think that breach of copyright on a panoramic website is of interest to the panoguide community, and I hope that other people point out such things in future.

Hi,
I have to agree with John Willetts, . . they were too far away - why didn't you get in amongst them . .
Years ago I used to play my fiddle with a group of morris dancers and I have been thinking about a morris pano. I would love to able to take a pano from within the group of dancers, but that would be very very difficult and would require much staging of the shots. Another possibility was to be between the musicians and the dancers, but even that would not be close enough to capture the sweat and the exhaustion of the dancers.
As it is, I am no longer involved with morris so haven't had the opportunity to ask for the extreme levels of co-operation that would be required. In fact I haven't taken any, so I can't complain too much. Perhaps next summer.
Cheers,
Pete

It is not surprising that there are no replies from UK. The prices quoted in one report on the 5D MkII were, USA $ 2,699, approx £1,500 Europe € 2,499, approx £1,990 U.K. £ 2,299
The official price in UK is approximately 50% higher than the price in US. We in the UK are taken for suckers by Canon. Guys in the US are so lucky when it comes to buying cameras.
As I have been considering buying a 5D MkII, I have been looking for sources of cameras where Brits are not ripped off as in UK. (The same applies to all other camera equipment too).
If I decided to buy I shall wait until it's been on the market for a few months and discounts are available then pop out East via Bangkok and visit Fotofile, www.fotofile.net/
If I am stuck in UK I might consider buying from this company. www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/
Neither place has the 5D MkII listed yet but compare their prices with UK prices for other cameras. I do not have any links with either of these companies, nor have I previously bought from them but I have come across good reccommendations for them.
Cheers,

A very impressive VT. I like it, even your music was OK, for a while, and when I became sick of it I was able to click the button
Personally, I think that your colours are a bit off, but that is not meant as a criticism. I think your colours give a rosy glow to everything, which probably adds to atmosphere for the sort place it is.
Is this FPP job?
There have been some extremely good virtual tour links here recently, I'm going have a serious attempt at one. My early attempts with Java look so bad now

Pete
