First time I have used viewpoint correction in PTGui & although it did the job, I wasnt too enamoured with the length of time it took to render. Still, I suppose sometimes it does have its uses.
I think the fountain scene is a perfect example to use the view point correction. I use it everytime if the floor is a pattern like this. Looks nice!

Doug Aurand said: I don't think you guys addressed the question tturner asked, why Trausti isn't "working on HTML5" when "KrPano, Pano2vr and PTGui are all beta testing or have in the works HTML5 viewers"
The HTML5 viewers out there are not ready for the public. It will take some time to get there. Unless FireFox and Internet Explorer make the drawing surface much faster (or someone finds a workaround), Flash and Silverlight will dominate.
I'm at 3 frames per second with my native HTML5 viewer for a 400px by 300px window, but thats it. In fullscreen I get 0.6fps with the CPU spinning at its max. I don't think anyone will like that.

Which won't work on FF or IE. They all work only on the Safari browser using a special interface.
I think Trausti raises valid points here.

Without a fast drawing surface, the workarounds start even before the new standard is taking off.
Making web pages with ascending bubbles or sprite based animations is easy with what HTML5 provides, but rendering viewports or even fullscreen in the double digit frame rates is a different story. For each movement in the projection, all pixels change per frame.
In Flash or Silverlight, fast frame rates can be achieved and there is even available processing power to do nice things like anti-aliasing of the projection.
I'm sure the (online) game designers have the same thoughts.

The new canvas tag intended for rendering 2D shapes and bitmap images is not going to challenge Flash or Silverlight when it comes to render spherical panoramas. I have ported over my Silverlight viewer VRLight to use <canvas> in HTML5, but there is not more than a few frames per second on the display. The new JavaScript engine in FF and IE9 is very fast, but the drawing surface of the canvas is slowing them to a grinding halt. The computation time in the inner loop is not relevant anymore.
Haven't seen a HTML5 viewer out there that runs off FF3.6 or IE9. Is there any?

GoGoPaulo said: And if you want to see how I stitched it with PTGui: vimeo.com/8103506
I have a few comments/feedback for the video: Why optimizing 'Vertical shear'? (@01:40) And I also would not optimize a, b and c all together at the beginning. Start first with b and the horz/vert shift and check the control points. You should also optimize Pitch and Roll of the first image because the camera is never levelled perfectly (and don't has to be).

Here's a VR showing the waterworks underneath the dome if you were curious-

There is a second level above this shot where each nozzle has its own pump. VERY noisy down there when it is running/spraying by the way. Had to wear big ear protectors like what people wear on the airport tarmac.
Cool, thanks for sharing! How did you managed to get there?
They also shoot water high up in the air:
Quite impressive (and loud)!

Mark Schuster said: I often wonder whether I should, like you, not bother with the nadir and zenith. Is it cheating? Well there isn't (usually) much down there of interest, and up there; clouds or blue sky which surround you anyhow. By leaving them out it would certainly make life easier. The handheld nadir is usually a sod to stitch and makes leveling a beast. And then there is the time wasting, and painful, business chopping off my feet!
But the problem with this kind of nadir is the repeating pattern of the stones. If the pattern is irregular (like grass or paved street surface), stitching errors won't be obvious. For this kind of pattern I always use the view point correction for the handheld nadir. Otherwise its a mess to stitch.
panorama.cpicture.net/Seattle-Center-Fountain.html Taken handheld and stitched using viewpoint correction.

On IE8, the sample presented on the front page (www.virtualsinc.com/v4/index.php?tour=15) has reduced height until completely loaded. You need to check that. I also would recommend use a panorama of better quality. This one has severe stitching errors and is overexposed.
And I think 360cities is great.

Skridlov said: I recently bought a Zenitar 16mm Russian manual lens to use on the D700. It currently costs £137 delivered. It's ridiculously soft until you get to F8-F11 but I usually shoot panos at F8 anyway. There's not much ca, in fact it's no worse than the Nikkor in this respect and as I usually shoot RAW the conversion eliminates the ca. I've only shot a couple of tests so far but I'd say it's a very good value option for FF use. Roy
f/5.6 is not too bad. I have a comparison of the different apertures made some time ago: ivrpa.org/blog/3651/d700_mc_zenitar_n_16mm_f_2_8_... A problem with the Zenitar is the lens flare. While its a great lens otherwise, I wouldn't recommend using it on a bright sunny day for a 360x180.
