I did not remove or disable this thread, so I am not sure how this happened. Those of you that saw the thread vanish - did it disappear from the forum list, latest threads etc? If you used a bookmark to go direct to the thread did you get an error?
Apologies, and thanks for in advance for your help James.

Sorry about the lack of search! I've just force-updated the index and search is available now. I am not sure what went wrong, so please do let me know if you notice search not working again in the future either through the forum or by using the contact us link top-right.
James.

Ooops sorry my mistake about the 14 days. Computer software is excluded, so make sure you do not break the seal! Similarly perishable goods (for example cut flowers, food) are excluded.
Interestingly there is a statutory duty of care on the consumer to take "reasonable care" of the product, but there is no precise definition of what this means and the seller can stipulate what is considered reasonable. Having said that the seller cannot restrict the consumer's reasonable opportunity to inspect and assess the product. This probably explains why a consumer is entitled to open packaging and inspect the product (mobile phone handset, camera, whatever). I imagine that for a camera it is possible for the seller to stipulate you can switch it on, explore the menus and settings, feel how big/heavy it is etc, but not to actually take any photos.
There's a useful guide to all this on the OFT website (admittedly the advice on it is merely advice and not legally binding in itself, and presumably applies only to the UK): www.oft.gov.uk/shared_oft/business_leaflets/gener...

Hi Fergal
Within the European Union the Distance Selling Regulations allow you a cooling off period when purchasing goods over the phone or Internet. There are exceptions, and you are responsible for the cost of returning the goods. A good example of this is mobile phones: buy a mobile phone in a store and it is the manager's discretion whether to accept the phone back if you decide you don't like it after you have taken it home. But buy it over the phone or Internet and you have the legal right to return it within ~14 days providing you have not damaged it or the packaging (note: this applies to the handset only - the contract will still be binding from the moment you first use the handset to make a call).
Anyway, all this means that yes you probably can buy camera equipment online or over the phone and return it if you don't like it. However as far as I know the returned goods must be in mint condition. I do not know how much you could legally "use" the equipment before you are assumed to have "accepted" it and can no longer return it. (A bit like using the mobile phone to make a call, etc).
There's some more info here: www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resource_base...
Regards James.

Hi Pete,
I've had another look at the logic but I cannot find a mistake. I'll have to do some tests. On the plus side I spotted a tiny inefficiency in the logic, so the site should be a few hundredths of a second faster...
The logic for the randomly selected banner panoramas selects only 360 degree panoramas (the majority of the panoramas on the site are 360 of course).

panoguide was down for approx 15 hours 11th/12th June due to a hardware problem at my hosting provider. I'm investigating further, but in the meantime, apologies for the interruption.

Hi Mark, SEO is something I had spent some time on when I first created the forum - the key is that the URLs are very clean and most search engines will not realise that what they are indexing is a forum.
Anyway, thank you everyone for your feedback. I've already scrapped the work I've done on jforum and will refocus on improving the current forum.
Thanks James.

Thanks for all the feedback. As it happens there is plenty of hosting space - I simply never got round to setting up image upload in the forum. In fact there's quite a few things missing compared to your average forum:
* avatars * signatures * instant messenger links * private messages * votes / polls * upload images and attachments * more sophisticated moderation features * improve security (e.g. IP logging/lookup) * improve url/hyperlink handling * speed
However the replies so far have reminded me of my original intention with the design of the forum as it is - to deliberately keep it simple and avoid "geeky" stuff.
Sounds like I need to rethink my ideas for re-developing the forum!
Thanks James.

Back to my original question... forums?
I'd really appreciate comments on whether a conventional forum like jforum, phpBB etc is a good idea or not - i.e. do you like the fact panoguide currently has a "no frills" forum, or do you miss having avatars, polls, etc?

Not necessarily! There are java wikis and it's not that hard to integrate a php wiki. The panoguide store is php. I'd need a little time to set it up though - I'll drop you an email later and let's chat offline.

Hi John,
The Simple Machines forum looks interesting. Yes, jforum is offline from here too but yes, panoguide is 100% Java and I envisage keeping it that way because that is what I am most comfortable coding in, and because it will be much easier to integrate a Java forum into a Java website etc. Panoguide is pretty stable now and has been for months as far as I know (and my site monitoring tells me).

Hi everyone,
I've been (slowly!) planning and working on changing the panoguide forum from its current form into a more conventional phpBB style forum (using jforum as it happens).
Out of interest, do you like the current very simple no-frills panoguide forum, or do you prefer forums with avatars, private messages, polls/votes etc etc?
Feel free to reply here or contact me directly with your thoughts, comments, etc.
Thanks James.

Hi Eugen,
I'm happy to help other panoramic websites and to add to panoguide. However I respect the fact that some people will not want to provide content to panoguide because panoguide is a commercial site. (John and I have not discussed any transfer of any kind, I'm just making a general comment.)
As for telling everyone on the panotools.info forum/list to come to panoguide: given the arguments in the past about the panotools list (see for example www.panotools.org/debunk), the last thing I would want to do is be accused of trying to "steal" someone else's forum/members etc. Obviously panoguide welcomes all panoramic photographers, but I don't think I need to advertise in that way... do I?
Thanks Eugen, James.
