Changes to Panoguide

I thought I should answer the suggestions that I have "sold out".

Sure I have not given panoguide away, but then that would be plain stupid given how much of my hard work went into this website. However the main reason for the change of owner is that due to changes in my personal life over the last couple of years, I don't have the time to do what I would want to do with panoguide. Also I feel I have let the community down on a few occasions by not being able to react quickly enough to stuff happening in the forum.

Panoguide has been a commercial website for several years already because this website used to carry google advertising, an Amazon store front and some product vendors run affiliate programs. However it remained a hobby and not a full-time job for me.

I have never avoided my responsibily to safeguard personal information and respect privacy, and I am confident that Charles and the team at Tour Wrist will do the same.

Now that panoguide is owned by a commercial organisation involved in panoramic imagery and who have staff able to spend time maintaining the website, I am confident that the forum community on panoguide will be better served than with me in control.

James

Panoguide has not had any major changes or new developments for a couple of years now, and I am pleased to say that is about to change. The reason for the lack of innovation is that I have found it increasingly difficult to find the time to look after and develop panoguide further. (For those of you that did not know, Panoguide has been a hobby for me and never made it into being a full time job.)

Anyway all that is about to change as I have found a company eager to take on Panoguide, maintain the independent forum, and develop it further alongside their other products - Tour Wrist. The team at Tour Wrist will be making a separate announcement of their own shortly to introduce themselves as the new owners.

I will still be involved and you can still contact me through my members page here and no doubt by searching for me on google etc.
Regards
James.

I've pulled this thread as it has got out of hand.

Constructive criticism is perfectly fine, but there's a lot of criticism in this thread that is far from "constructive". Plus criticism of 360 Precision has happened before, and this thread adds nothing new. Although it may have been allowed previously, Panoguide does not seek to act as an intermediary for disputes between customers and manufacturers.

Lastly and as always, deliberately using language that is inflammatory or offensive will not be tolerated.

I have said it before, and I will say it again: commercial announcements are permitted in the commercial announcements forum. However clandestine commercial activity is not acceptable.

If you come to panoguide and your first post endorses a product then you should expect that others will think you work for the product maker or a reseller, and not criticise people who have been participants in panoguide for many months or years.

Sorry folks I've pulled this thread because I suspect foul play based on the complaints I have received. However I do not think it is appropriate to publicly disclose precisely what complaints have been made.

Commercial announcements are permitted in the commercial announcements forum (where I will move this thread).

I've pulled this thread as it has gone so awfully off the rails and there are numerous posts that break the forum rules, some more blatantly than others.

I've made some changes to old threads, and consequently post counts for quite a few members will have just changed. Plus I have corrected a mistake in the logic that keeps a count of posts which will cause post counts to drop slightly.

Trausti,

This is not the first time you have hinted at bias, criticised moderation of panoguide etc, and we have talked about this offline. It is the first time you have posted publicly about this.

It is no secret that I do not proactively moderate panoguide and I do not read every message or thread. I rely on forum members (and non members) to use the alert moderator link and let me know if there is something objectionable happening in the forum.

Unfortunately on many occasions and particularly recently, some members have got angry because of something said in the forum, and instead of telling me they decide to vent that anger in the forum. I have previously described this as "fighting fire with fire" but really it is "fueling the fire" to make it last longer. New comers to panoguide are probably left feeling that not only is it acceptable to be rude and offensive, but that it is acceptable to be aggressive, rude, offensive etc in retaliation. Not only does this kind of behaviour create a vicious circle, I think it makes new comers even less likely to participate because they realise that even some of the respected good panographers on panoguide have fierce tempers.

I simply cannot dedicate the time to read every post on panoguide and moderate proactively. (This website doesn't pay my bills.) I am reliant therefore on cool-headed visitors and members of panoguide to let me know about problems... but that doesn't happen very often.

Using your comments above I have started tracking down threads and posts that break forum rules and should not be there. I'm still trawling, but have already found one and pulled the thread - but neither you nor anyone else ever made me aware of this particular thread in the past.

It is a shame that you want to go as you have contributed a lot to panoguide. You are however one of panoguide's respected - but hot headed - photographers... you are therefore both valuable for your contribution and troublesome when it comes to unpicking the chaos of a discussion that has gone completely off the rails and got personal and aggressive.

Since this thread is in the appropriate place on panoguide and since I am the only person who should be offended by your post, I will leave it for all to see, and my response.

I think this discussion has more-or-less run its course now, and since it has mostly gone off course and doesn't add much value to other photographers (newbie or pro) I have pulled the thread.

I'm sorry to knock you off your soap box Trausti, but no, anyone who publishes anything on the internet is inherently open to being reported on, commented on and critiqued. But that must be constructive criticism - personal attacks are not tolerated here. And neither is "dragging the name [of someone] through the mud".

You openly suggest that posting a link to low quality iPix images would be a "violation of the rules" - err, not it wouldn't. Perhaps this is a rule on another website or one you control. But not here.

This website is NOT about perfectionism and is open to all panoramic photographers including photographers who have much to learn. As I said before, we all stand to learn from other people's work, both good and bad.

And NO this is not for debate - as I VERY CLEARLY stated in my earlier post. Maybe I need to remind you that I pay for this website, I wrote the code behind it, and you pay nothing. This is my website, I write the rules, I moderate it and if you happen to disagree you can go elsewhere. It really is that simple.

By all means contact me offline about this if you want to, but I will come down very harshly on further public rants about what is or isn't within the rules, wannabe moderators and blatant attacks on others.

I've pulled a few posts in this discussion to bring this back on topic. Feedback about this website is welcome either directly to me using the contact us links, or in the feedback forum area. If you object to content on panoguide please use the moderator link but don't go off topic to discuss forum rules, whether moderator intervention is warranted or pretend to be the moderator.

Just because critcism is harsh doesn't always mean it is unfair. But there is no excuse for using offensive language or making the criticism personal.

Equally just because a panoramic image or tour is not perfect doesn't mean it is not welcome here - in fact quite the opposite as we all stand to learn things from seeing the good and bad of each others' work.

For what it's worth I agree with those that have said that this college's panoramic tour is poor quality. There's lots of errors in the panoramic images which would be forgivable if the photographer is a newbie (and discussing them may be useful for other newbies). The one that stands out the most to me is the distortion - the floor, door frames, windows desks etc all look curved. Unfortunately its really hard to tell whether the photographer really is a newbie or not. It would be interesting to see if Terry gets any response to his offer to help.
