Compared to any other alternative they are rubbish - but not complete rubbish. You'll never be satisfied with the results compared to what you see as pro tours and as they use a production workflow that it completely different to stitched images, you will probably find that you are heading up a blind alley.
Having said that they will get you started, although I gather that setting one up for optimum results isn't quite as straight forward as you might think.
They do have one purpose though, as a very cheap alternative to a Ladybug or similar for shooting panoramic video. If that isn't of interest to you then if I were you I wouldn't even think about using one of these products.

Pete, do yourself a favour and re read Hans' reply to your earlier comments. You might also do well to study his remarks in the "More parallax error towards to the edges of Sigma 8mm but not to the center" thread.
I've used PTGUI ever since the Mac version came out and previous to that PTMac - which works in a very similar way. The only time I've found unpredictable results have been when I've made a mistake. I don't know how you can substantiate a claim there are a couple of hitches that need sorting out. I'm talking about release versions, not betas - which obviously are work in progress. If you know something else report it to Joost who will look into it - don't just snipe from the sidelines.
We are where we are today with image stitching being a semi automatic process that can be carried out by almost anyone with very limited knowledge precisely because of people like Hans who have worked with developers and made their time and expertise available for free.

Looks like compression artifacts - what size equirect are you using and how much compression are you applying? It's always a trade off between final file size and the quality of smooth tones - like a sky.
If you can give us some more info we can probably point you in the right direction.

Paddy2a said: I do now have a small problem with flex between the lens and the camera. This is not due to the atome but to my Nikkor-Canon adapter. I have a standard 30 euros adapter and I would not trust it anymore up a pole. Can anyone recommend a strong Nikon-Canon lens adaptor ?
I have a similar problem, use either the Fotodiox Pro - NOT the standard model or the Elephoto clone - see elefoto.com.cn/en/news.asp
Thanks to Michel Thoby for pointing me in that direction.

Hi Pete
I think that it is a lot easier when the crowd is all focused on a particular event - they tend to stay relatively still. Those bonfire panos were all shot with just 4 shots ( 5D with a shaved 10.5mm nikkor). I haven't tried - yet - to shoot a crowd where there is random movement and I expect that to be much harder. I'm particularly interested in shooting street festivals which was one reason why I bought the 10.5mm Nikkor and there are several coming up this summer so will be interesting to see how my technique ( using the monopod to rotate rapidly while staying stationary myself) copes.
Cheers
Bruce

Marcus Hamilton said: How do you find the Nikon WC-E68? Good?
I used the WC-E68 on a Coolpix 5000 when I first started shooting panos. That's 38 shots for a spherical so although lightweight it isn't exactly user friendly. As I recall it did need a lot of correction - can't remember how much, but a lot, long time since I've processed a NEF file.
I'd also second the choice of a BoBracket - really excellent piece of kit.

Having finally rebuilt my kart into a new chassis after the great crash of 07 I thought that it would make an interesting exercise in working in a very confined space and testing my batch template.
I used a 055 Manfrotto tripod with no leg extension and centre column raised ( because of the lack of space) and this may well have been a mistake. As you can see there are some bad stitches in the z and n area but as I don't normally have this problem I'm putting it down to very slight tripod movement when changing the camera orientation. www.bhphoto.biz/kart/kartbatch.html
I quickly fixed this with the addition of half a dozen cp's manually placed and then produced a .hdr file in PTGui (for Mac ) and tonemapped it with Photomatix pro with a lights/shadow map layer for that gritty urban look which is such a fad at the moment. www.bhphoto.biz/kart/kartlsmap.html
Even though this wasn't a 100% good example of use of a template (which I normally achieve) it reduced the production time enormously and does demonstrate the value of this technique. It does however demonstrate how easily operator/equipment error can foul things up

Hi Mike
Really just a case of not overcompressing the mov file - which is why they are quite big downloads. I used a 6000x3000 equirect and as I recall a setting of 51% jpeg compression in Cubic Convertor. It might have been a little less. That's the beauty of CC you can see the result as you try and squeeze the file size down.
It's always a compromise - sometimes adding blur to the sky can help but usually I am just very careful with the amount of sharpening added ( I use a layer with a high pass filter blended in Hard Light and the adjust the blend weight) and then play with compression settings. An even blue tone like that produces the most problems.

Thanks to all for pointing out my titling errors - the joy of Pleinpot, so easy to use - unfortunately so easy that if you rush it you make stupid mistakes
Yes David, it was very hot but thankfully no humidity to speak of.

Hi Nick
I still use a shaved 10.5mm on my 5D - but only because I haven't got round to buying a Tokina yet. The compatibility issue overrides anything else and I don't think that anyone would advise a buyer to go that route when there is an alternative like the Tokina available.
Just my opinion.

Bruce

sorry it seems there is a problem on your page: after selecting the pano it comes an 404 page error.

That's very odd - other people that I have emailed the link to directly aren't having that problem. Is anyone else getting that error? Could you let me know?
Many thanks

Just put a page together of panos from a recent trip to Cyprus www.bhphoto.biz/cyprus/index.html
All shot on a 5D with Nikon 10.5 FE in a BoBracket and mounted on a lightweight Manfrotto monopod. I've still got a couple of issues with either flex of the lens/body adaptor or possibly focus and I'm still not completely happy with VP insertion either - not helped when working in restricted space or with low angle sun either. Cloudless blue skies were nice but resulted in fairly large file sizes to avoid compression artifacts.
