I don't know why you got the marks/speckles with the last one other than the reasons stated?

I got that lens with those marks. So cheap, hard to let it pass by. So I took it. cool

You can always shoot bigger overlap images (more shots) to overcome any shortcomings with the shaved 10.5mm.

Nice suggestion. Will try it out later. Thanks Smooth!

thanks Smooth. will try it later.

Note: I just read about the "softness" on the compressed part of the image when using the 10.5 on FX. Am I regretting why I sold the 16mm? blush

Plus, I see a Nikon 16mm in tip-top condition selling locally for US$ 688.00. I'm tempted! devil

I bought the shaved 10.5mm, sold my 16mm. Hoping to yield better results, without those annoying marks/spots www.panoguide.com/forums/qna/8322/.

I took sample self portrait last night, will try a spin tomorrow. My question is to FX-10.5mm users, do I crop the black vignette? Or will PTGUI detect and remove them out during the stitching process?

Hi Smooth,

I knew you'd reply! Thanks!

Just to clarify, after shooting my 1st pano, I move the tripod, say 3-5 feet to the right? Then shoot the 2nd pano.

Won't the 2nd pano change perspective if I miss lining up the tripod to the same "imaginary" horizontal line on the floor?

i'm guessing, on the 2nd pano, i'll do an off-set in PS, then overlay, then might need to "distort" the 2nd pano (due to change in perspective) to line up with the 1st one?

Pardon me for asking so many questions. blush

thanks!
Edwin

I'd get a Canon 5D Mark II (testing one out now) with Canon's 8-15mm fisheye lens. The lens won't be out until March/April so my plane ticket to the Canadian Rockies will be booked for April or May. wink

+1. Canon 5DMKII+8-15mm FE and ALL kinds of pano head, for me to try. wink

back when I was still on D90, I used a 10.5mm FE. 7 shots total, 6 around, 1 zenith, on -15 degree. I got well adpated to shooting this way.

now on D700, I got a 16mm. nothing changed on my workflow. still the same.

just my few cents worth...

I closed a 2nd VR deal! This time for a motel. cool

During the ocular inspection with the client, I was shown one room, with mirrors on all four sides - this was the leaving room, plus on one side, is a staircase going up to the bedroom! On 2-3 sides, there's a couch, a table with flower vase, and another table/short cabinet I think.

I have searched the forum for answers, but cannot understand fully the workaround on this. Need help please, if possible step-by-step process.

I'm using a D700+16mm FE, 6 shots on -15 degree, and one zenith shot. i patch the nadir hole in PS.

Thanks much.

Edwin

Edwin,

that's the reason why you get this result. I do not get this on my 16mm nikkor.

May be you ask a Nikon Service point to have a look at it. Now you know why I asked you to take a testshot with a second hand lens in the other thread wink

Heinz

Hi Heinz,

I just finished another shot this morning. Shooting the same store(different branch), the spots were crazy. I was shooting at F8, infinity. I opened the aperture to F6.3, and noticed that the spots were reduced. Lowered to F4, still some signs of spots, at F2.8, their gone.

conclusion, the marks/tiny specs (not scratches) on the front element is the culprit. open wide, obviously they will not show on the photo.

i'm hoping the 2.8 shots are sharp enough for a VR. if not, would probably need to spend time on cleaning up the spots in post-processing...

thanks!

Thanks guys. I might stick to my 16mm for the moment. Will wait for another VR job to materialize, then I might get the samyang, or hopefully, the 10.5mm if it's not yet sold.

I just got an LX5 (thus funds depleted), will see if I can come up with decent VR shots with this cam. laugh

I currently shoot a D700 with Nikon 16mm fisheye. There's an opportunity to get a shaved Nikon 10.5mm with box/accesories, for about US$567.

My only motivation to get the 10.5 is to be able to shoot less frames for a 360 pano/vr. I just love the idea of shooting quickly on a crowded street, which I do not think I can do using the 16mm (have actually not tried it yet).

If you were in my shoes, would you get the 10.5?

Clean the lens. Both front and back. I doubt that the Nikkor 16mm fisheye actually does produce this.

hi Hans,

actually, my copy has small markings on the front element. like raindrops, permanent. got this really cheap from a friend. wink

it does not usually show on regular outdoor shots. will try another indoor zenith shot with ceiling lights.

thanks,

Hi,

Took this zenith of an interior shot I did earlier.

Here's my exif:

Device: Nikon D700
Lens: 16mm F/2.8D
Focal Length: 16mm
Focus Mode: Manual
AF-Area Mode: Single
AF Fine Tune: OFF
Aperture: F/8
Shutter Speed: 1/1.6s
Exposure Mode: Manual
Exposure Comp.: +1.0EV
Exposure Tuning:
Metering: Matrix
ISO Sensitivity: ISO 200

What should I do next time to prevent those spots? Is it because of the lens I am using?

Thanks,
Edwin
