My first few weeks doing Panos (problems)

One answer would have been to fit a superior rotator like that made by Nodal Ninja, the RD-4/8/16 for example or even the Manfrotto 303 rotator. All could have easily been fitted to the Pano-maxx.

What ever you purchase next make sure you purchase one with external detent adjustments like those I have mentioned.

On the subject of panning clamps, there no uniform width for plates and when screwed, they end up off-centre causing misalignments and stitching errors.
Use all Arca Swiss compatible clamps. Nodal Ninja offer Arca Swiss compatible clamps and camera specific plates for perfect alignment.

Kirk, Markins and RRS also make excellent Arca Swiss style clamps.

Also available for battery grips.

Which panoheads are considered the best today to use with bigger/heavier DSLR cameras with fisheye/wideangle lenses (like EOS 5DMKII with a batterygrip), mostly for capturing 360x180 HDRs?
My vote is 100% for the Nodal Ninja M1 with extra rail stops and RD16 rotator.

My modified Samyang 7.5mm MFT Fisheye is my main lens on the Sony NEX 5N. It works a treat. It took a bit of mucking around to find it's sweet spot but now for size and weight nothing can beat it.

Ken, If you would like some images to play with shoot me a private message with your email address.

Samyang 8mm - Manual or auto?

The Samyang 8mm is sharper edge to edge of the shot then a Sigma 8mm but not by a lot. The sun flare has different characteristics and is possibly worse than the Sigma f/3.5 8mm Fisheye.

You will learn a lot more by purchasing one and putting it to use. They are not expensive, especially when sold under another name.

Yeah well I solely use Lexar Professional cards now and I don't have any issues with any of my Canon's. I use Sandisk in my Nikon's so I don't ever get confused with what belongs with what.

I think John might be on to something with Bridge browsing his card reader. They say you shouldn't edit directly on the card.

All mentioned can do the job of making tours very well.
All have some limitations, and some start out prices don't include "all" features.

5) TourWeaver: Very expensive and not as good compared to others based on my reading the forums.
I get sick of reading this! Tourweaver standard is $199.00. That doesn't make it "very expensive" it makes very comparable to all the others.

The Pro version is expensive because it does include "all" the extras in one package like "brand free". The others all come up to similar costs once you add in all the features.

Download trials of then all and play. Don't jump to conclusions and really test to see what is best suited to your own situation.

I have seen this when people fail to format their cards in the camera before shooting fresh images. People pull the images from the card and feel that's enough. But the reality is you need to format cards in camera.

The question becomes: Do you format each time you remove images from your card?

Second to that, a card can only be formatted so many times before the end of it's life. A little like a rechargable battery.

I am wondering what everyone's thoughts were in regards to the Sigma 8mm 3.5 vs the Samyang 8mm when paired with a crop censored Canon, 1.6?
Understand these lenses share little in common with each other other then the 8mm focal length (even that is up for debate!). The Samyang requires rotational shots and zenith shot to cover the sphere where as the Sigma 8mm doesn't require the zenith shots as it has a wider hFOV in portrait orientation when we talk crop sensor 1.5x/1.6x

The lens flare is less with the Sigma 3.5 8mm Fisheye. But the total image file size is larger with the Samyang 3.5 8mm Fisheye.

Both do a great job at creating panoramas with minimal shots. But comparing the two just because they are badged as 8mm is a mistake "if" you don't take into consideration the extra zenith shot required by the Samyang 8mm.

Your only other option worth considering is fixed +10° with 33° angle roll (6 rotational shots) and two nadir shots 180° opposed. In theory this would work. But not always a good option for nadir shadows.

This was a surprise to me too first time I used it. I checked the reduce CA box and found it did not remove purple fringing so it's a step backwards in my opinion. I have a Nikon 10.5mm.
CA and Purple fringing are not the same thing (although we like to deal with them at the same time!). You must use the (Lens Corrections Profile) CA check box inconjunction with the Defringe All Edges option on the next Lens Corrections Manual (Tab).

You do NOT need to check the Lens Corrections "Profile" (Enable Lens Profile Corrections) check box to enable the CA check box.

Really as Hans stated already these two options should have remained on the same tab, one beneath the other.

Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 update

I recently updated to ACR 6.7 also and wasn't impressed that the manual sliders had been removed. Though I had some idea it was coming from reading about it on DPReview some time back.

From reading about ACR 7.0 and Adobe Lightroom 4.x it appears that ACR 6.7 is a stop gap release.

I like Hans have run varying tests and have been quite impressed, even on non profiled lenses like the (Modified) Samyang MFT 7.5mm on my Sony NEX 5N. If what I read is correct the "Sliders" that are being introduced with ACR 7.0 on the "defringe controls" (that I don't see with the ACR 6.7 release). This sounds to be a major advantage and improvement over the older CA Controls we are familiar with.

Like Dennis, I also like to have a way to manually take control and why we are without sliders in this update is a little bewildering and annoying. But I reserve judgment and I'm relatively happy with the results on the images I'm processing ATM.

I note using Fiero's DevalVR player via Photoshop PanoramaPreview that it generates a flattened 8bit .jpg file of whatever you are "previewing" and this .jpg file is placed in the PSTemp folder.

This folder is not self cleaning on Photoshop exit so if you want to keep your system optimised you will need to manually delete the preview.jpg it has generated.
