Pentax DA10-17 with panohead machined of aluminium, anodized black. The panohead can be taken off the lens, but in my opinion that´s unneccessary. It has built-in bulls eye levels on two arms for easy alignment. I used it with K10, K20, K-x and K7. Shooting technique is 6+Z+N on 1,5 crop cameras. It also has a slot for a single row arm mounting, just in case Pentax will enter the FF camera market. Of course the lens hood would need a shave then.

Comes with a nice Loewepro lens bag that keeps lens and head parts together in one place.
Lens is in good condition, comes with the original box and all papers. Lens must be from 2008 or 2009, I purchased it shortly after it entered the market. Rarely used, that´s why it´s for sale.

Price 550Euro (480GBP/770USD) OBO. Shipping at cost, ask for rate.

Compact camera/lens for lightweight travel

Hans, that is exactly the problem of the Pentax K-x - there is no possibility to connect the rc trigger you show with the camera regardless what the description tells. Same with K-r.
So a 50%-10$ solution is this:

RC trigger in modified ir trigger on hotshoe

Distance between ir emitting diode and receiver - ir diode seems to have a wide angle.

Modified ir trigger

This 2.5-to-ir solves some problems but not all. Only functions available with the ir will work with rc or a standard cable release now. So still no MLU and multiple exposures with the K-x.

"My Pentax ks has a similar problem. No wired remote. Just infra-red from the front.
I wonder if there is a general solution to using an infra-red remote from the back?"

Not from the back but from the top. I mounted an ir remote on the hotshoe cover of my K-x, emitting diode facing forward. The remote is modified with a 2.5mm plug wired parallel to the trigger switch. On a pole I trigger the ir remote with the rr remote. Sounds crazy, works fine. I can show some photos later.

pole pano zenith shoot

Hello,

if you have only sky or clouds in the zenith try to shoot it from the ground an position the zenith shot manually via image parameters/blend priority. With structures in the zenith you have to raisse the camera again.

And try to mount camera/lens in line with the center of gravity. That´s quite off tne NPP but brings you easier handling of the pole plus better overall stitching results than a camera supported in tne NPP wobbling on a pole..

Hello,

building a light weight solution specially for use on my high poles was also my goal for my first considerations. But the Pana 8mm fe lens plus an appropriate camera added up to about 1500 Euro - too pricy. If this sum cuts down to about 600 Euro its worth to think about again.

Interesting setup would be 6 around at -10deg, camera/lens slanted diagonally (handheld zenith shot required). But at the moment no one knows about the technical details (fov) of the Samyang 7.5. Soo it´s still some time before i´ll think about it again in detail. App. 1000g less on the pole would be really fine.

Doug,

you know this:

www.vrwave.com/panoramic/photography/lens_databas...

That´s the list I immediately thought of when I looked at yours. There are some very good ideas in the vrwave list. Maybe you adopt them into your list, maybe you use the vrwave list instead.

By the way, there are at least 4 different versions of the Sigma 8mm around, two MF versions and the more common 8/4 and 8/3,5 AF lenses.

Hello,

4 (90deg) instead of 3(120deg) shots might be easier to guess, that´s my experience.

The pano at the end of this page
www.360und180.de/how-to-pole-pano.html
is completely non-retouched. But I made another one from the same position but the blending seams in the crane structure. It was a pias... So one thing is bringing the seams in less critical areas.

Nick, Bill,

what I see on your previous how-to-shot is that you support camera/lens in the NPP like this:

What you should try is to support camera/lens in or nearer to the center of gravity:

This way of mounting camera/lens to the pole will give you less pole bending at the top sections and will make handling much more comfortable. And yes, it seems you´re off the NPP, but with less or no more bending of the pole your overall deviation from the NPP will be less. You must try it to believe the difference in handling and stitching. This is a result with no further processing, as you can see it´s quite easy to estimate the 90 degs between shots (4 around, fe lens 8mm, crop 1,5):
tinyurl.com/335r9uj

So I don´t think you really need a rotator. I tried it with a rotator once but from my point of view it´s not helpfull at all.

Another thing - from my expierience putting a motorized head on a handheld pole is not the way to go.

For those interested:
tinyurl.com/yarbbs9

This is a series ot test panoramas I shot in my workshop. The macro slide with the attached dial gauge allows adjustments less than 1/10 of a millimeter.

first pano - without macro slide
second pano - with macro slide, zero offset
the other panos - result with offset - 0,5mm to +0,4mm

My conclusion is that slight adjustments do make a difference in z + n.

It was also interesting to see the differences in the results from APP and PTGui. Same source images, APP never closed the hole in z, PTGui did sometimes. I guess it boils down to the optimization algorithms. In general the shown results generated with PTGui show a tendency which I could not see in the APP results.

"However what ever I do the Mark II needs FOV to be 91.22 while the old 5D needs 90.9.

Why FOV needs to be different is to me a mystery."

In the Canon datasheets I find slightly different sensor sizes for the old 5D (35,8x23,9) and the 5D MKII (36x24). There is approximately the same ratio in sensor sizes and fov difference with the MKII having the greater fov with the same lens. So this might be the explanation.

You just need two objects - one close to the lens, one far away. That´s all you really need. Maybe the grid, maybe a postit on a window. Whatever suits.
