Water In Panorama (and a nodal point question)

I recently shot a pano with a fountain in it.
Although it was well within the 30% overlap it did not pose a problem while stichting.

See: www.trumnet.com/360/keizer_karel_plein_nijmegen.a...

I didn't even consider it could be a problem, or I would have made sure the fountain was centered in a single shot to avoid problems.
If the waterfall isn't to big it shouldn't cause any problem.

Stitcher and QTVR

Try setting the field of view (fov) a little longer (at 50 mm for instance).
You can also view the effect of this by zooming in a bit when you play you qtvr (same thing actually).

And don't use long streched formats when displaying the qtvr, try keeping the 3:4 ratio.

Hope this helps..
Showing your qtvr might give us a better clue on what might be wrong.

I'd get at least 1GB of RAM in there.
I don't think it wil cost much nowadays?

I've got 512 now, but Realviz Stitcher gets pretty slow when I'm near completing a pano.
Saw it run on a machine with 2GB; way faster..

I think you have.
I got a Manfrotto 303SPH also.

If I understand this 360precision correctly you'll need a different head for every other lens or camera combination. This makes upgrading your camera expensive (say you want to upgrade your Canon 300D to the newly announced 350D, you'd need to wait for the correct head to be designed before you could go and buy it).

On the 303 SPH all you have to do is take some time to find the correct nodelpoint for you new lens/camera.

Hi Mark,

I was in a similair situation a couple of months ago and since I already like photography I decided to learn how to do it and bought equipment to match.

I my case I bought a sturdy Manfrotto tripod, a Manfrotto 303 SPH panohead and the Sigma 12-24 to go with my Canon 300D. You'll probably also need to buy some software (or work out the more difficult freeware available). In my case it was an investment of about 1750 euro's.

Besides that it will also take approx 40 to 80 hours to figure out what you need, where to get it and how to create good panoramic photo's with your new equipment and software.

I very much liked the process of learning and like being able to do nice 360 photo's now.

So, if you're willing to learn and to invest time and money in 360 photography I can recommend doing so.
If you don't think you'll sell many 360 photo's to you're customer or other customers in the future you might just want to get a third party involved.

And if you're looking around; I also live in the Netherlands (near Nijmegen), so do contact me.. wink

Photography is my hobby, but I got a payed deal for a website including some 360 photo's. That's the reason I got into vr-photography. My first job (site: www.begraafplaatsennijmegen.nl/new/ - not yet live) payed me enough to pay me for all the equipment I got, so I'm happy with that. It did not pay me enough for all the hours it took me to learn vr-photography and build there site, but that's where the hobby-part comes back in. smile

We'll be trying to sell vr-photography via my work, but I don't think there's a huge market for it. People like it alot, but the don't like the matching prices. smile

I wouldn't mind if it just remains a hobby, but making some cash of it would be nice too. smile I don't think it would be easy making a living on just vr-photography.

Hi Tim,

I have the Manfrotto/Bogen 303SPH head. I like it alot, but I never tried any other head either. smile
The 360presion looks nice too, but it looks to me like you will be stuck to a certain body and lens combination.

I don't know which lenses you already have.
Any wideangle or fisheye?

With the 303SPH you can use about any lens (there are exeptions I believe).
I have the Sigma 12-24 wideangle myself. At 12 mm on my Canon 300D I need 25 images for a full sperhical.

Besides the panohead, the camera and a wideangle lens you might need a firm and steady tripod. The combination is pretty heavy.

If you never plan to do 360x180 (full sperhical) photo's you won't need the 303SPH, you could go for the 303PLUS, for instance.

Thanks for the tip, Smooth.
This is exactly what I need.

Not cheap, unfortunatly.
45 euros. I might be trying some more manual scripting. smile

Tourweaver looks nice as well. But come on; 300 euros more to get your own logo image embedded..

I'm trying to add hotspots to the java-version (ptviewer) of a panorama photo. Although I understand this is possible by hand, it would be nice to have a program where I can just a hotspots on the image directly (like in Realviz Stitcher) and let it generate the corresponding code.

Is there any (freeware) software that does this?

Hi Chas,

My 303 SPH doesn't have this problem. Perhaps you could just return it and ask for a replacement?
It doesn't sound like normal behaviour to me..

I did get a new tripod, as the cheapo tripod I already had was unstable with the weight of the 303SPH and my camera (but it still very usefull for my camera alone).

I got the Manfrotto mdeve 558B. This tripod is solid as a rock and fits the 303SPH like a glove.

It is however a pain to drag around. smile

I think the look pretty good.
They do take kinda long to load. Looks like you're loading the whole image before it shows any image.
It should be possible to load the images while they are loading (at least with cubic vr's it is). Then you'll have something to look and, and to scroll trough, before the whole image is loaded.

I try to keep my pano's at around 1 mb per image. Leaves enough quality. I don't know how large yours are?

I use the Manfrotto 303 SPH panohead. I don't see any reason why that head wouldn't work with your camera.

30% overlap should be enough for a stitching program to get it stitched.
