A new demo version (2.18) of AutoStitch has been released.
This adds an optional gain compensation step, which adjusts the brightness of images for sequences in which the exposure changes. The default setting is off, but the feature can be turned on via the Edit->Options dialog.

This is a new and largely untested feature, so we would be grateful of any feedback via this forum.
Thanks-
Matt.

We have released a new update to AutoStitch.
This fixes a minor bug in rendering (horizontal/vertical lines at block edges were sometimes visible). It also adds a manual orientation control, which allows the user to centre panoramas by hand if required.
The webpage now also includes a FAQ, which should answer many of the questions posted here.

There is now a new demo release of AutoStitch (version 2.17).
This version has a JPEG quality option, and slightly improved memory management.
More importantly, the previous demo version will expire in January 2005, so please download the new version from
www.autostitch.net
Cheers-
Matt.

Erik,
This is because the first image is (at the moment) assumed to be in the centre of the panorama. I'm planning to add a method to automatically centre the panorama in cases like the one you have shown, and also it would be nice to have the ability to decide which image goes in the centre of any (360 or otherwise) panorama.
In the meantime, you can just change the order the images are read (e.g. by renaming them as minorlogic suggests) so that the centre image is first.
Cheers-
Matt.

Thanks all for the helpful comments and suggestions.
There is no commercial end-user version of AutoStitch as yet, but we will be releasing updated demo versions with fixes to problems such as JPEG output quality and memory management.

To answer minorlogic's question: if you want to stitch images that are rotated 90 degrees, you should turn "AutoStraighten" to OFF in the options, since this option assumes that images have the same rotation.
Triggerhappy: you can change the setting "System Memory" in the options dialog if you are running out of memory.
Cheers, have fun with the demo!
Matt.

James,
Thanks for the kind words.
AutoStitch is actually not designed to deal with images with radial distortion e.g. fisheye images, because it assumes a pinhole camera model (straight lines in the world are straight in the image). The results might look OK if there is not too much radial distortion though.
As for failing to join panoramas, this might be due to the images having a small area of overlap. AutoStitch works best with lots of image overlap, as this makes it easier to tell which images should match. Given that you have already shot the images though, there are options that you can change to encourage more image matches to be found, these are explained in the README file accompanying the distribution. For people interested in the mechanics of how AutoStitch actually works, and it's limitations, please see our research page:

AutoStitch is a fully automatic, full view panorama stitcher being developed at the University of British Columbia.
We now have a free demo version available at:
