Any chance of getting a copy of the original file? I'd very much like to look at the quality close up!
BTW it looks like it's not necessary to cut off any of the shade as the whole circle is visible. Is that correct?

Thanks Erik, I've signed up at viewat.org and will get something loaded up soon. For some reason when I tried to checkout the Flickr VRs it bought my aging laptop to it's knees. May have been something coincidental, I'll have to try again.
Thanks everyone for the advice for the circular lenses. While I do see one in my future at some point I've decided that I need to learn a lot more about VR panos before investing in more hardware. I've just created the 1st couple of panos with zenith and nadir shots. Nothing special but C and C are welcome.

Thanks irieman, yes it's all good information as I'm just starting out.
I'm definitely OK shaving the shade off a 10mm lens if I know it's the right one for me. The Nikon is fiddly on FF Canon's due to the lack of aperture control. I'd really like to be able to focus wide open then close down to take the picture, and the only adapter I know that will do that is Mark Welsh's.
I'm currently using a 16mm F-Distagon FF fisheye, and I'll stick to that when I want FF as I like it for the occasional "straight" shot.
Why do you say the Nikon would not be your 1st choice if buying again? Resolution, the aperture issue? Something else?
Thanks again,
Mike

Great link Doug, thanks so much. A quick summary from it for the lenses of interest to me;
10.5mm Nikon 54 users, 4 FF 8mm Peleng 15 users, 1 FF 8mm sigma 42 users, 5 FF 10-17mm tokina, 1 user

I'd guess he was standing on the platform of one of the cars (the one that is sunlit). Note that the roof of that car is just about level with the pano.

I think you're right Hans. I looked at the photo of one on the B&H website and thought initially that it was only shaded along the long edge of the projection (meaning that I would be able to see the quality out to the edge at the top and bottom of a vertical photo), but they have some close up photos of it and I see that it has been designed with a small "fin" along the short edge.
Thanks,
Mike

Thanks Hans, I didn't know about those lenses. The 10mm Sigma may be a good option. I think I'll try and find a store that will let me take a photo on one and examine the image circle before I buy.

Thanks Doug. I'd forgotten about Coastal, yikes! their prices are way up there. I also found out that Olympus made an 8mm circular, but it seems to be about the same price as the Nikon 8mm. I just realized that the 10.5mm Nikon is a G lens. Tricky getting the aperture working on a Canon.
It looks like the Sigma may be the way to go.

Hi, I'm pretty new to creating 360 panos and could use some advice.
The 1st few 360 panos I've made have been with a FF camera and a 16mm FF fisheye. I expect to be taking quite a few on or near the shoreline, so to reduce the manual blending I'll need to do due to movement I think I need to look at a circular fisheye. Can anyone comment on the relative quality of the 8mm Sigma vs Peleng? The Nikon 8mm/F2.8 looks like it might be very good but has a huge price tag. The only other option I'm aware of is the 10.5mm Nikon with a shade shave that will give most of the circle (I'm using Canon so the Nikon's will fit with an adapter). Michel's review showed that it's better than the Sigma.
Secondly, I'm using pbase for my regular photos at the moment, but it won't host VR files. Are there any other websites that you can buy gallery space that will allow VR viewing of panos, or do I have to look into getting my own website?
Thanks,
Mike
