I regularly use a 5D (MkI+MkII) + 15mm Fisheye (Sigma) on top of a handheld 8 meter pneumatic telescoping pole with the camera mounted on a (slightly modified) Nodal Ninja 5. Yes, I have to raise and lower the camera three times for each series to adjust the Nodal Ninja, and yes, that's no fun at all, but I can make full 360x180 panos that way, with only the slightest bit of cloning in the Nadir (an area of about 25x25 cm's). So what you want is perfectly possible, but it's time consuming and certainly not the easiest way to make a pano.
You need a VERY strong (stiff) pole if you want to use it horizontally. Just how strong depends on the length you need it to be extended. I use two modified Gitzo GM5541's for this, but even this contraption will bend a bit under the load of a 5D+15mm as you can see here: www.flickr.com/photos/ianjameswood/4875605328/siz...

I've just updated GoodReader to v.3.7.0 on my iPad 'classic' with iOS 4.3.2 (8H7), and it works as it always did with my Pano2VR WebKit panos.

Ken Warner said: ...snip... I looked at my NN3 this morning and maybe another useful place to put the laser is on the tilt arm or camera plate. that would put it in the same relative position as on the hot shoe and if the laser is small enough it wouldn't interfere with the movement of the tilt arm.
Ken, if you look closely at the pictures I posted with the electronic levels you might be able to see a glimpse of my tilt-arm mounted second laser
About the 'through the viewfinder' laser: about a year ago I tried it with my Canon 5D, and I got a beam. Laser position is critical for this, but if it works at all depends on the type of focusing screen the camera is equipped with. I abandoned the idea, and now use the viewfinder dovetail to mount my electronic level for important nadir shots.

Photoshopping, masking and perspective correction have always been inevitable in my nadirs, but for best results I do my best to minimize the need for them. Not all nadir surfaces are perfectly level and flat, and if there are unmovable objects very close to the nadir you need all help you can possibly get to reduce parallax problems. With the camera accurately aimed at the nadir mark using the laser, and leveled using one of these:
at least you only need to worry about maintaining the proper height of the camera, and keeping it still (enough) of course. For keeping it still I have a solid solution for most situations, for measuring the hight without plumb-thingies within the frame I'm considering using multiple lasers in an arrangement like the British designed for their 'dam-busting' bombers in WW2.
Erik
ps. about that 'through the viewfinder' configuration: remember that the mirror of an SLR is not 100% reflective, so some of the light will pass straight through it, not only reducing the luminance of the beam that comes out of the lens, but also straying into areas inside the camera where you probably don't want it to go.

This is what I made for myself some time ago:
Don't think anyone makes them in numbers though. Nick could I guess, but I'm not sure he'd be able to sell enough of them to make it worthwhile.
Erik
ps: I also considered making one that projects the laser beam through the viewfinder-mirror-lens for better accuracy, but I wasn't sure what effect this would have on the camera itself, so I made this one instead.

Here's a nice little helper for critical nadir shots I picked up at Photokina yesterday:
It's a set of electronic spirit levels that can work solo, or as a master/slave team. To mount the master level in this position I stuck a plastic hotshoe on a detachable viewfinder eyecup, from which I first removed the rubber cushion. When preparing for the nadir shot I just slide it in place over the viewfinder and turn it on. Obstructing the viewfinder is not a problem since I'm not going to use it anyway for that shot. I think they will come very handy indeed!
In case you'd like to get them too: They are branded Seculine Action Level Cross AL205, and were made in Korea.
Cheers!

Ken Warner said: ...snip... What's keeping Adobe from making a version of Flash that has GPU capability?
If the GPU is available to WebKit (or whatever) why can't other graphics software use it?
No doubt they will, there's already a beta Flash plugin that uses GPU acceleration, but it only works with IE9 (beta) on Win7.

Time will tell Trausti. I can assure you that I too will deeply regret the demise of Flash if things go that way, I've invested far too much time and effort in it not to. But there's no point in sticking one's head in a bucket of sand, hoping the world won't change if you do. Fiero has shown us YEARS ago what hardware acceleration can do for VR panos, now Webkit comes really close to DevalVR's performance, EVEN on Macs. That's what exites me about Webkit! Let's all hope Adobe succeeds in doing the same, THAT would really help keeping Flash on its feet for us. I'd sure like to see Fiero get filthy rich by selling his know-how to Adobe Just like you I seriously doubt if HTML5+CSS3+JS can ever come close to the possibilities we have with Flash today, but I am convinced it will be a very convenient (because plugin-less) addition to our toolkit for simple stuff.

Bit too fast there Trausti, you're forgetting about good old prof. Dersch. I don't have the link to it right now, but he's made one several months ago! It works with 'Minefield', the experimental version of Firefox. Don't dismiss it just because you (or rather, your programmer) can't do it yourself.

I guess you didn't read the first sentence Trausti. With its API's Pano2VR offers ways for programmers to 'communicate' with its Flash pano files. Have your programmer take a look here: gardengnomesoftware.com/wiki/Pano2VR_-_Flash_API He'll know what it's for.

Pano2VR also has a (perhaps somewhat hidden) bonus: you shouldn't underestimate the possibilities of the Pano2VR Flash and JavaScript API's. A good programmer can do absolutely wonderful things with your Pano2VR panos that most likely are not possible with other Flash pano output.

Hi Ken,
I posted links to a bunch of them intended for Ipad and larger screens on the Pano2VR forum:
gardengnomesoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t...
The HTML pages themselves are VERY basic, it's just about the image quality, not the interface (yet).
