Which is, in your experience, the best choice for a GPU in panoramic operations?

Sunex + D300 + Nodal Ninja

Hi there!

I've been using Sunex with Nodal Ninja 3 for about a month now.

You can get excellent results mounting the camera over the L bracket for a 3 shots panorama, while I won't suggest the 2 shots mode over the lower rail because of the large footprint in the nadir being the lens too close to the rotator.

Unfortunately, I can't give exact NPP settings for your camera: anyway, it is quite easy to find the correct distances over the rails!

Cheers,
Mauro

Just wanted to know if someone would be able to give me correct settings for Nodal Ninja 3 for use of Sunex fisheye on Canon 350D ?

Thanks a lot

I can't provide exact position on the rail for NN3 or NN5L because I use to mount the camera on the bracket with a T-30 adapter and Acratech Arca Swiss type quick release adapter.

Anyway, the off-axis entrance pupil distance, measured from the front lens vertex into the lens, should be 4.5mm for 2 shot and 12mm for 3 shot.

Are you getting invisible seams with just 2 fisheyes yet?

Oh, and which camera are you using with the Sunex lens?

Hey Doug,

I'm using Sunex with my good old Canon EOS 350D.

With the help of Alex (thank you so much for the assistance), I've been testing the lens with NN3 on both 2 and 3 shots situation, fine tuning the NPP position.
My initial difficult was that the correct position on the rail was not quite the same while changing the number of shots.

I got easy and immediate stitching work with Easypano Panoweaver on 2 images.. Realviz Stitcher DS is not working as good as Panoweaver with the same sets of image. I suppose I have to calibrate better lens properties.

3 images are automatically stiched with both the softwares, and the outcome is excellent.

In the stitched part of the 2 image pano I still have a slight darker seam like the one visible in John Houghton's stitching test. Will post my results once I find the way to correct it!

Only hassle while using Nodal Ninja 3 with the SuperFisheye is the very big rotator footprint on the nadir.

Cheers,
Mauro

I am afraid the current NNs DON'T support 2-shot panos. NNs block some of the view of the lens when the fov is close to 180 degrees. We are planning for add-ons to allow 2-shot panos be taken with NN3/5.

Hi Nick!

I've been testing the Sunex SuperFisheye with Nodal Ninja 3, mounting it in landscape position on the lower rail with the 30mm T-adapter. No hassles.

I'm still fine tuning the correct NPP position on the rail, since it varies slightly between the 2 or 3 shots situation.

For 3 shots, portrait position would be good, because the overlap between the different shots is enough to cover the bracket image.

Mauro

I've been testing the Sunex SuperFishEye for a week now.

Micheal did an excellent work with his review and I agree with his position, even though I don't have his skills and knowledge yet.

Quality is way better than the Coolpix/FC-E9 combo on Canon EOS 350D and 40D, but lens calibration in for stitching is definitely needed when you work with 2 shots.

3 shots stitching is easier.

I'll post some examples sometimes soon.

I know from Sunex that the 2/4 position rotator will be available again shortly, possibly in February.

Fancy tripods for the nadir?

I do exactly what Doug said.
I measure the no parallax point with a tape or approximately using a part of my body for reference. Then I rotate the center column to the horizontal position and raise the tripod legs keeping it leveled. For the reference point on the ground, I simply use a coin which I remove immediately before the shooting.
Other ways I use to shoot the nadir with similar equipment are brilliantly described in Rosauro's site: www.rosaurophotography.com/html/technical0.html

Probably you are talking of the Manfrotto 055XPROB or the aluminum 190XPROB.

By extending the central column to its highest vertical position, it can be swung round to horizontal without removing the head or disassembling the column itself.

I use the 055 model for my panoramics and it is very easy to shot the nadir!

Can't find the seller you mention on eBay. Maybe you can specify the username or the item number for the auction..

Good luck anyway smile
