Doug, It was scary the first few times for sure but now after thousands of hours flying I don't worry about it too much. If the heli were to crash into the ocean it would be a total loss.....and the 5D is probably the cheapest part of the aircraft
Michael, Glad you enjoyed the photo. I also have a mast (a shorter 35ft one) and they are great fun. Really nice to have you on here and I am sure if you give it a try you can make some panos from your mast. practice makes perfect!
The first aerial panoramas I made were terrible! After a few hundred tries they are getting better.

I have some from all over the world.

Thanks guys! Glad you enjoyed the photo!
Pat, thanks for the kind words, I have been enjoying your pans as well. You are doing a great job with them and it is great fun to see the landscapes around where you live. This was a bit of business and pleasure. Had a couple jobs to take care of and then did some flying for fun. The winds were very strong but also consistent, that made the flying not too bad but landing was a bit touchy.
Pele, thanks! For joining the ocean just some masking and smoke and mirrors . It is a difficult prospect because the ocean is always changing and it takes around 6 seconds for me to shoot the shots. I have learned after many of these aerial panoramas that they dont have to be perfect, you just have to make them good enough that the human eye does not pick up on any of the errors!
Morten, I am going to make a print tomorrow on the big epson, I will let you know how it turns out. As for the highlights the credit goes to Canon for that with their wonderful 5D
Cheers!

Just got back from a week in Maui and wanted to share some of the stuff I shot.
First here is a pano over the famous surf spot 'Jaws'. Really lucked out on the lighting but it was super windy. In fact after I landed a rescue helicopter (hughes 500) came in to rescue a surfer and it was being blown all over the place. Another pilot came up to me after and was amazed at how stable the joker (small remote control helicopter) was versus the full size heli!
Click for pano www.aerialpan.com/portfolio/aerial_popup/57
Here is a shot of the joker out over the surfers, it was pretty cool at one point when I got low over them they all stopped surfing and were looking up at the heli trying to figure out what it was/what it was doing.
I will add more as I get them finished up

Thanks Morten, glad you enjoyed it.
You are correct it is 2 panoramas, one with rendering and one without. I used flash panorama player and used their "loadpan" utility to load the other panorama when clicking on the hotspot. In retrospect it was very simple but I knew absolutely nothing about XML 12hrs ago.
I agree on the "loading" after thinking about it it would be confusing especially on a slow computer. Maybe I will just try and get a less intrusive status indicator.
I also agree on the icon but could not decide what is the best way to show a hotspot. Most of the hotspots i see are really obnoxious to me and over the top. I am trying to come up with something minimal to show the hotspot and not detract from the rendering or the panorama.
The video tour was made using final cut pro and Pano2movie. I am in the process of re-making the panorama portion of the movie though because I have found a better/smoother way to make those portions using adobe after effects CS3
Cheers,

Thanks Ken!
Can you control the transition? I was hoping for a rather seamless transition from one to the other or the ability to change just the area of the panorama with the rendering.
I will check it out.

I need some help with a concept I have been thinking about. I have a panorama of a building site, and the same panorama with the finished building rendered in.
I would like to devise a way to allow users to basically turn the rendering on or off with a button in the viewer. Anyone know how to accomplish this?
Take a look at this for an idea of what I am talking about:

Thanks!

Thanks everyone for the comments.
Valentin,
Currently there are no regulations on flying the helicopter around town. I am very careful with the equipment and carry a large liability insurance policy just in case. I treat the rc helicopter as I would a fullsize and very carefull pre flight and maintain the machine. The first one I bought now has over 3000 problem free flight hours on it, so they can be very reliable if taken care of.
Michel,
That is a great place to live! I am so glad you are able to see the international fountain finally in action through my pano!
Cheers

Hans,
What I meant is that I have been using Auto-blend with great success for flat panoramas up to 270 degrees, like this:
But now I am trying to use auto blend for my aerial spherical panoramas. Because of how I shoot these, from a RC helicopter it is difficult to overcome the fact that CS3 wont blend over the wrap.
I am trying to use auto-blend for pans like this:
