4 out of 5 stars A very decent monochromatic laser printer   July 20, 2010
Megan B.
I've been using this printer for half a year and it never gave me any trouble. Setup in Windows 7 is easy, print quality is good, double-sided printing is a manual but easy process (driver pops up a message on your screen telling you how to put the paper back in). Never had a paper jam either, which was a real annoyance with some printers I've used before.

Definitely worth choosing this over an ink printer, as long as you don't need colour prints.

(I'd give it 5 stars, but the practice of not including a USB cable with the printer is a real annoyance.)

1 out of 5 stars Nice Looking Printer....   May 4, 2010

I bought this printer from Tesco at what seemed to be a great price. The printer did the job and when the ink/toner finished I discovered, with amazement and great disappointment, that a new replacement cartridge was almost as expensive as the printer itself! And to top it all, the cartridges are fixed so it is not easy to re-use them. The first thing that crossed my mind was to throw the printer away and buy another from Tesco and the second was about the "green & ecological" conscience that we should all have and positively exercise these days. I wonder what happened to the manufacturer's "green & ecological" conscience in this case.

1 out of 5 stars Nice printer, shame about the chip in the toner cartridge.   January 19, 2010

Have you wondered why the ML 1640 printer is so cheap? The reason is that they force you to buy their highly expensive toner cartridges. These cartridges are fitted with unnecessary chips which count the number of pages you have printed and then, when you reach an arbitrary limit they stop you from printing any more. This happens unexpectedly and can be very expensive and frustrating - as I have found to my cost. The amount of work that goes into making one of these cartridges is large - involving considerable emission of greenhouse gases, and when the toner runs out other parts such as the drum have much life left in them. Despite this Samsung force you to throw it away and buy a new one rather than allowing you to re-fill it - this is very unecological and also a rip off for the user. This unecological scam in fact has 3 parts: 1 making the cartridge hold much less toner than previous models such as the ML 1250, so that the user needs to change it more often, 2 selling the new printer with a cartridge that has little toner in it and 3 incorporating this unnecessary chip that stops you printing when you have reached a set page limit. We are told that greenhouse gases are causing global warming that is threatening the future of our planet. Perhaps the Government should prevent companies from practices that create unnecessary pollution and rip off the consumer just to make a quick buck in the short term. I contacted Samsung Customer Help who of course did not help. By the way, this printer has one more ridiculous feature - the combination of a toner save facility and a page counting chip. In the printer software there is a toner save mode, which is usually an ecological and economical feature. However, in the case of this printer if you select this mode your saved toner will remain in the useless cartridge once the set page limit is reached (this is a situation I found myself in more than once). So I could not advise you to buy this printer/cartridge, despite that other than this blatant rip off it is not a bad printer. Since writing this review I have managed to buy a used ML 1210 printer, and my ML1640 has been consigned to the attic! Whatever happened to technological progress, and giving the customer what they want? Of course this ludicrous page counting chip is not something a customer would be aware of unless they did in-depth research such as reading these reviews. I fear this is a good example of a corporation wasting the customers' time and money. However, reputation is everything and I hope they realise sooner rather than later that such practices are not in the long-term company interest.

Very good printer. I have it for almost 2 months and there is no problem at all.
Good combination of value and quality.

5 out of 5 stars Great so far, but buy a cartridge & usb cable with it   November 24, 2009

My wife and I bought this printer as we are both aspiring grad students and have to print lots of articles and our own writing. Here are a few points on our experience:
1) We went through the 'introductory' toner quickly, and it reached fewer than 500 pages (one 500 sheet pack of paper).
2) Consequently, I'd recommend that you buy a replacement cartridge if you plan to do lots of printing off the bat: Black Toner Cartridge - Yield: 1500 - Compatible with: ML-1640 / ML-2240
3) Make sure you buy an A-B USB cable with the printer because you do not get one in the box, e.g. Belkin PRO Series Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Cable 3 m .
4) Make sure you install the drivers in Win XP and Vista. I have an Ubuntu Linux & Win XP dual boot, and it was autodetected in Ubuntu, but needed drivers in WinXP.
5) Be careful how much paper you put in and how you line it up (use the guides relatively close to the sides of the paper) lest the paper gets jammed (it's only happened once to us, but happened more regularly with an older HP previously).

The printer has served us well so far. I like that it's black whereas so many other printers are a tepid grey - arbitrary indeed, but still pleasing especially because our desktop computer is all black. It also just seems to be really good value for money and has suited us well.
