Re: Newbie and complete novice.

What's going to decide the equipment Jo and Tom should use it the equipment the competition is using.

If the competition is using a one-shot setup, something like one of the Coolpixes with the FC-E8 or E9 could do a full 360°x 360° image which may be a selling advantage.

I had high hopes that the Sunex lens could do stitchable 2 fisheye capture on a DSLR so I could keep using the workflow I have with my Coolpix 5400/FC-E9 but get the better image quality from my Canon 400D. It would have been a considerable competitive advantage. Unfortunately they were never able to give us any sample souce photos that produced an acceptable seam.

This all about competition, so Jo and Tom need to study what their competition is doing; equipment, software, hosting and distribution, then figure out what they have to do to raise the bar one way ot another, without too much expense and keeping the workflow at a reasonable level.

I've developed a distict competitive advantage in my area with my still photos by moving up to the Canon 400D and using Photomatix for HDR/Tone Mapped photos. I've been using Enfuse for my virtual tours. The other iPIX photographer here in Albuquerque isn't using either software to get views out the windows and brighen up the dark corners. Circlepix is cutting and pasting the windows which is very time consuming considering they charge less than I do.

My whole approach has been to offer better quality work that can be seen at first glance and charge more for it. Sometimes not a lot more, though.

So what Jo and Tom need to do before they buy any hardware, software, etc, is study the competition and then decide what they need to buy to be competitive.

Hope that helps

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

Re: Panorama cameras vs Stitching

i once have seen a 43min. scan interior shot of spheron-rotapancam. amazing but for my taste too long.
2. you can produce rectiliniar(up to 160 degr.) out of swinglens or also 360-camera-shots. use altostorms rectiliar plugin(for photoshot and paintshop pro)- if you stitch with panoramafactory you can choose also different output. i dont know yet if you can also do this without stitching. pls ask them if the could implement. both are simply fantastic.
also stitching two swinglens-shots are possible. i mean shooting level and tilted upwards. anyone has done this?
for quick shooting and highest level posters only analogue rotapancamera will meet my requirements. you will also need a highlevel scanner. microtek 1000xl if you have long stripes. maybe sprintscan 120/microtek artixscan 120tf.
michael przewrocki-2009-30 years of rotapan-photography

Re: high res panormaic shots ?? Help!

Andre
There are less expensive lenses than the Sigma 8mm but only the Nikkor 10.5mm is used by more VR Photographers

Tim Hatch has a break down of what equipment was used on the World Wide Panorama website which probably has more panoramas than any single website. The Sigma 8mm is used twice as much as any other lenses other than the Nikkor 10.5mm

timhatch.com/projects/wwp-equipment/

By using the Sigma 8mm on your Canon you'll have plenty of support all across the Web.

As far as rotators, the Nodal Ninja 3 is very affordable, but 360Precision just annouced their Atome, which is ordered for a specific lens and has a tilt that eliminates the need for a Zenith Shot with the Sigma 8mm. Its only US$300

I suspect Nodal Ninja will be announcing a similar product soon.

Also in your $1000 price range is the Sunex 5.6mm which can produce a full 360°x 360° image with just 3 shots. Although the general opinion is that the Sigma is a little sharper and brighter

Maybe some one can make a better suggestion if you told us what type of virtual photography you want to do and if this is a hobby or for commercial use

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

gus
Depending on what program you;re using to composite the images, you may be able to use multiple copies of the same image to composite with.

Photomatix's Composite function will let me use 2 of the same image to get more if the impact of that exposure like using the -0- exposure twice in the set of images being composited to get more "blue" back into the sky

Doug Aurand
Albuquerque, NM

DON'T DUMP ANIMALS ! ! ! ! ! ! (Flash VR)

I wanted to feel what it was like to be an abandoned pet so I made a trip to the SPCA and locked myself in one of cages for 5 minutes, not a lot of time but it really gave me the feel of being one. I created this VR in the hope that viewers will understand how wrong it is to buy a pet and then abandon it just because you lose interest.

Check out the VR: SPCA - Don't Dump Animals

www.singaporevr.com/vrs/spca/spca.html

Robert Piontek said:
Wow, the CA from that sigma 8mm is really bad! After seeing these images I would only purchase it if I knew it could be well corrected.

Robert, CA in RAW images from the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 can be well corrected in ACR. It's only a problem in jpeg images.

John
