Re: Quad pod/ self standing monopod

DorinDXN said:
Hi Ken, those aren't problems, just helps to keep the NPP precisely, useful when there are close objects to the camera, and the weight is on the top not bottom, then is not need the spirit level at all, one feels whhen the setup is in position, entire gear act then like a spirit level.

Dorin

Interesting. I guess it's an individual preference.

And the thought came to me that a monopod is never really a monopod. I have two legs and the monopod has one so that makes a tripod -- a large, fleshy, overweight, saggy tripod

Re: First decent pano

Between both versions, I actually prefer the less processed version, it looks like a good scene and I would like to see more of the location, though I dont think using an HDR method would be the way to go with a scene like that. It might be an idea to just work on your best set of (dust free) exposures and see how that turns out before going down the HDR route. (I have had similar problems with dust too, so I know that one). Also, instead of HDR try Enfuse: enblend.sourceforge.net/

Shooting in direct sun I didn't have much range to choose from. Next time I'll choose a better time of day, like I said it was a test.

Being Scottish, I do not know much about sunshine But! It can add to a pano & some guys around here seem to use it as a composition tool, so it is not something to hide from. Keep the Sun in, some of us dont see it that often.

Re: Some construction panos - thanks

Gus, for 37 years I worked with the construction managers "US Corps of Engineers" on major construction projects around the world. I have since retired and for the last 11 years have been creating panoramas at 360Texas.com.

Your panorama progress photo's are a very interesting adaptation that serves a useful purpose for off site designers and project managers. You are a very innovated person.

I am also a member of another forum called Fort Worth Architectural Forum. John Robert an Architect, hosts the forum. I hope you do not mind but I took the liberty of copy and pasting your comments and links into our FWA forum.

www.fortwortharchitecture.com/forum/index.php?sho...

You can check this link from time to time.

Thanks again,
Dave

Re: LAOS

I like the map thing on the Laos page, but when trying to view the panorama, it jumped to another while the last was still loading? Also, what is the Gorilla site about? I saw the Glasgow link, which is my home town, clicked on the link and viewed a pano which has definately not been taken in Glasgow. (incidentally, the panos I did view look in need of some leveling).

Re: What is the best stitching software? cs4?

I'll take note of those.
How do they compare to CS3 for recolouring, levels, hue/saturation and sharpening?

If a pano has been stitched using these, can they be edited afterwards using CS3?

I'm told the panos sharpness can be affected by the software. How do these two compare?

From what I read, the PTGui does make some sort of RAW images, but if you could tell me more, I'd appreciate it. Would they still have 22,000 different colour levels?

Regards,

Fergal.

Re: How to configure and use Agnos MRotatorUT Panohead?

All of this style of panohead are very simply to use.
Download this *.pdf file for the MrotatorTCPs series the idea is the same. tinyurl.com/ktsg9o

More support documents can be found on the Agnos website tinyurl.com/nxdwrv

Learn to find correct NPP tinyurl.com/lx86lz

Regards, Smooth
www.smooth360.info

Re: If money were no object. What would be your dream setup for virtual tours?

Ken

There is no need for exact leveling when shooting the pano as levelling the pano in PTGui Pro or Standard is a very simple and fast thing to do using vertical points.
Actually in most cases it is faster than leveling the tripod.

There are however 2 cases when levelling the tripod /panohead is adviceable.
1. If the panorama has no vertical lines at all which can be used.
2. If you want to do template stitching without using controlpoints.

Best and easiest way to level the tripod is adjusting the legs.
With most tripods it is just as fast as using a leveller below the head.

Hans

2nd attempt at a night time pano

Some months ago I tried a night time pano & it was a dissaster. So, here is another attempt, though of different scene. Taken about an hour after sunset, but the sky tends to hold its colour for most of the night at this time of year, so is more a sort of twilight pano.
panocorner.com/360-gallery/clyde-pano.html

Re: Pan from a moving riverboat

I tried Photostitch v3.2.1 last night and it has encountered difficulty to deal with larger matrix (2 rows x 5 Column). The software took it and started analysing the pics and then stopped moving to the save stage where it would do the real stitching. Although it seemed to be moving for smaller size (2 rows x 2 columns), it didn't stitch one pic correctly.

BTW, for shooting from the opposite bank, single row is probably enough. As a long river might involve a large number of pics (100+?), I am not sure whether Photostitch is as good as PTGUI in resource handling. We will see.

There is another situation which may cause problem. If the river bank suddenly gets widened at one point, two neightbouring shots may capture the same subject in slightly different size. Say a shop window as an example. If the same shop window but slightly different in size in two neightbouring shots, how does the stitching work? It may be anybody guess!

I will give it a go - walking along the opposite bank and taking shots at regular distance in a stable light condition. Just watch this space.

Pele Leung

Batch stitching with the Nodal Ninja 5

The Nodal Ninja 5 is considered to be an excellent panorama head, with just one tiny glitch:
It is difficult to attach the camera plate to the camera with enough precision to be able to use it for batch stitching.

I got an idea that was so simple, that I had to buy a Nodal Ninja 5 with the R-D16 rotator to try it out, and I am happy to say that it works like a charm.

The details on the procedure are described here:
mejiatryti.com/Panoramas/Nodal-Ninja-5-batch-stit...

An executive summary:
Attach the camera plate loosely to the camera.
Stand the camera on its lens.
Use a machinist square to line the camera plate up with the vertical rail of the square.
Tighten the screw.
Done! With perfection!
