Probably the best known panoramic image stitching software, PanoTools is in fact a highly versatile set of tools/plugins for manipulating all kinds of imagery, not just for stitching.

Product version: PanoTools v. 2.1

PTPicker is a Java application intended to be platform independent and to provide a simple means of creating scripts for PTStitcher, PTInterpolator and PTStereo. It makes the process of defining source images and control points (or triangles as the case may be) quite straight forward.

On computers running Microsoft Windows, there is an alternative: PTGui, which provides roughly the same functionality for PTStitcher, but which will only do panoramas.

First thing to do is to start a new project

From the Left image and Right image menus, you can load up a pair of images at a time and define control points between them. The first time you select a given image, you are prompted for the image file, thereafter this is remembered in the script.

As you move your mouse across the image, you can see a magnification of the image, so you can fairly accurately position your control points.

From the view menu you can switch between points and zoom in and out.

Once you are happy that you have placed enough control points, you can run the optimizer and other PanoTools apps from the project menu.

As the optimizer runs, its progress is displayed in a new window. The same occurs when PTStitcher or other tools run.
