Creating circular panoramas with Panorama Tools

This is a really simple thing to do and for some panoramas the finished result is really effective. Here I am using PanoTools as a plugin to Adobe PhotoShop (PanoTools can of course be used as a plugin to GIMP too). The latest version of PTGui also provides a simple interface for creating these doughnut shaped images. Here I am using a spherical panorama of outside Buckingham Palace in London:

Next use the Remap filter in Helmut Dersch's Panorama Tools and select QTVR or PSphere for the source, and vertical fisheye for the target. Also enter in the correct field of view for your panorama:

You should get an image like this (click on it to see a larger version):

If you want the image the other way around, i.e. with sky around the edge and ground in the middle, simply rotate your source image 180 degrees (note: do not 'flip' the image as this will result in a mirror image):
