Any FULLY online tools to build a 360 interactive panorama and virtual tours?
Posted: 31 Oct 2011 at 11:39 GMT
Hi guys

Having a background in video making and web programming, I am now approaching 360 photography.

After few days of research, I was surprised to discover the lack of a web service that lets you (possibly stitch but definitely) host 360panoramas and build virtual tours by connecting them and create other types of hostspots.

Something like Pano2VR but fully online. A kind of YouTube for Panoramas and tours, so that you can embed them where you like, both in Flash and HTML5...

360cities does something similar, but it's pretty limited and (correct me if I am wrong) it doesn't do HTML5.

Did you find something like that around??

If not, I'd be quite happy to set up an informal group to start an open source project.

Cheers

Hello Dario,

A not unfamiliar concept, but I thing something like this would be counter to many panorama photographers' ideology.

The problem with things like YouTube, using the example you have quoted, is that there is so much that infringes copyright.

Professionals who contribute to this forum would, I think, be a little sceptical of where their work ends up, how many times it is being ripped off and what the end results could look like after some video-happy editor has finished adding his own two-penneth worth.

Many are very keen to protect their integrity as photographers; it is not as easy as taking up a cam corder and shooting someone's wedding (no matter how well it is done). Many of the shots you see showcased in the galleries are the result of not only years of experience, but also, individually, hours of careful work, processing and stitching the photos, creating custom GUIs, etc.

For those who want a quick-fix, there is still the 360cities website that caters for nearly everything you mention above. Then there are the owners of this webiste, TourWrist, who offer a similar app-based approach.

Good luck with developing the project. I am sorry that it is not something I would like to be involved with.

There is mine, fully automatic, no need to stitch (based on my stitchless method), the photographer upload only the fisheye photos, the final(or even entire) process can be passed to the end user (like adding/dragging the hotspots descriptions, adding extra photos and documents with tables, so on.. )

But is only available for companies which needs at least 1000 panos per year, so might be of no interest here. Will be also HTML5 when required, no such request so far..

About the open source, as is a web service, I tested from a machine running PClinux OS, and works, but the cost of the package includes the cost for krpano licence so can be regarded as open source only at the photographer end (i.e. software need for the photographer and his clients)

cheers,

Hi Jon

I clearly see your point there.
I am a professional video maker and I know exactly what you mean. On the other hand, videos and imagery are becoming more and more part of a common way of expression. It's like blogger vs professional journalist: we ll always distinguish and recognize differences in production values and quality of the output.

Also, thanks to point out the TourWrist solution, which, I guess, it's very close to what I was thinking about.
The professional package of TourWrist is clearly the most interesting, and I'm looking forward for it. If it does what it says in the tin, it ll be mainly aimed to professional like yourself and the others in this forum, willing to pay a fee for an ad hoc advanced service.

However, I wonder if a similarly advanced tools (hotspots, advertising, reporting...) would be useful to amateurs and the general user who has got a panorama feature in his/her smartphone or compact camera and would like to add an interactive pano/tour in his/her webpage or blog.
Given the democracy of the Internet (so far), I wouldn't see any conflict of interest with professional use there, as it would be more like a mass used webtoy.

I am not actually sure myself that something like that is (still) really needed.

It would be good to see what others think

60 Flash Tour launched a more attractive way of presenting and promoting your business. Inspired by Google street view service we were thinking of something similar that allows our clients to create the same kind of tours.

360 Panorama is a better way to really promote your home, office space, hotels and even car interiour! There are many ways how you can use this component for their own benefits. Think of the idea that people review their product 360 degrees - rotate and almost touch online.

We recommend this component to any ecommerce storefront, portal since this component allows you to attract visitors and present their products-in-common way.

Spread about our solution and help our team to change a common photos of view is 360 degrees.
It can be installed.
