Dealing with shadows when shooting with a monopod

I discovered this technique while on vacation this last summer. I hope others will benefit from my experience. I am sure there are other ways to do the same thing.

I have not tried this technique with a tripod. I am sure the concept is the same.

Here's an experiment my monopod did a few months ago...

I'm still trying to get my monopod to do the nadir shot. It's not real bright.
