I've been practicing with the new lens (Samyang), and using the NN3. One thing I've noticed, is that the focus ring turns as it should, but i can't say turning it makes any sort of changes, whatsoever. Using the Nikon D5000, I use the zoom function on the display to get a closer look at what i am focusing in on, and i can turn it from 0.0 to infinite without noticing any sort of change in the focus. Is this normal?

Hello Lorne.

Yes and no.

I don't know what you are trying to achieve by using the zoom function to "get a closer look" at what you are focusing on. Simply don't: you will need to set a focal point of around .5 to 1 metre (see forum comments passim with regard to the Samyang) and find the apature setting that provides the sharpest image. I do not know this lens, but with the Nikon 10,5mm, for example, this is about f9. Badders sells these and has tested it extensively. Perhaps he might be able to help there.

You might not notice any change in the focus with such a wide angled objective, especially if you are concentrating on the centre of the image. Details will not be as easy to see as they would with a 17 mm lens, but this is immaterial, as long as you have the right apature.

Once you have found the right focal point for your lens, tape it at that point (I use 3M tape, but only because I sat for 4 hours on a plane with a Norwegian representative of the 3M company, who gave me a free sample - it must have been the most boring 4 hours of my life, since the guy spoke with a difficult dialect and knew the history of the company since the year it was founded . . . but again, I digress (any comments, Trausti?)).

Part of these stages is to experiment to see what suits you best. And read carefully the posts in this forum and ask questions. Some of the gurus can be quite scary cry , but they will provide you with a wealth of expertise that will save you a lot of time and effort.

Yes, this is normal as the fisheye lens has a very large depth of field. I assume you are zooming using the live view function? Because the camera and lens do not communicate with each other. What you are searching for is the hyperfocal distance. This is the point where you get sharp focus from near to infinity. My findings with this lens suggest an Aperture of f/11.0 and a manual focus of 1.8 meters. But some simple test shooting will tell you the story. The live view function is not really the best way to determine this.

I must say I really love using the new lens/camera/panohead! I'm not exactly sure how to upload one yet, but i'll figure it out, and maybe i can get some feedback on any adjustments i need. Perhaps I need to get my website operational again in order to do this?

However, I was using Pano2VR before, so i've been using that for the trial period with that. I'm still working thru the software(s), but i believe i need something like pano2VR to make the panographic photo into a VR? or does PtGui do that too? I must say, i wish all software had the support that Pano2VR has on the garden gnome website!!

To correct the image layer mask with this lens, is photoshop the way to go? or does that work best with normal lens'?
