Tutorial on stitching panoramas with people in them

With all the questions about shooting people in groupes, here is a very simple explanation on stitching a panorama when the people are moving around. Not too many details. More of an overview. www.dlsphoto.net/Tutorials/Crowd_Demo/CrowdDemo.h...

Good overview Dennis,
I also like looking at the expressions on peoples faces as it adds a lot to a panorama than a dead pan look or forced smile. I tried to capture just that with my panorama of rubber ducks on the river, it's give you a feel for the action. www.smooth360.com/2010/duck_race
You should fix up this line:
Panoramas with people in them are much more interesting that without. I think "that" should be "than" in that line. Not that I'm a word smith, far from it!
Your tutorial overview shows it's takes skill to produce this type of panorama and it's not just a simple process as some people would like it to be. I for one appreciate the effort people put into these types of panoramas as I know the amount of work and time that is required for a great result. The closer the people and more crowded the scene the harder it becomes.
Your images clearly show how you achieved your result and should be beneficial to others learning.

Smooth,
Thanks for the feedback. I figured there were plenty of tutorials on masking and such. I did not want to go into that much detail, since I am no means a Photoshop guru. Sometimes a nudge in the right direction is all that is needed.
Spell check did not catch the word "that", since it is spelled correctly. I also am not an English major. That is why I cut-n-paste every reply here on Panoguide into Word so I can at least check my spelling.
The thing I like most about your duck race and snake pit panos is the sound. Just like a spherical panorama adds a dimension that flat pictures lack, sound ads yet another dimension. Darn you! Now I have to go out and learn how to add stereo sound. Lifetime of learning, baby!

Using Firefox, gives you automatic spell check while you are typing the words.
And I absolutely agree about the extra dimension the sound gives to the pano. Sounded like some of the spectators put all their feelings into cheering on their duckies.

Need quality stereo sound? H2 Zoom is the answer www.google.com.au/search?client=opera&rls=en&q=Zo...
As you may or may not know I pushed hard for this feature in Pano2VR as I used to use it in Java in the late '90 early 2000's but back then only compatible with Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player. I know other Flash players had ways of doing it but Pano2VR makes it so easy, thanks to Thomas for listening to his customers.
As for spell check, what browser do you use? For IE you can download IE Spell www.iespell.com , Firefox has a plug-in and Opera is built in (or did I install it?) Still forces "American" English on me - still that will suit you! LOL

Thanks for sharing Denis,
Taking many shots and choosing, overlaying ideal ones is one way of approaching the people issue.
I personally prefer just stitching and outputting a layered photoshop file and work from there, brushing in people that were blended away or removing people with empty parts of the neighboring image. I take many panos at exhibitions and there are always many people around, so far it all worked out fine. I do come from a PhotoShopping background I have to admit, that helps a lot.
Just my two bits whatever gets the job done.
Check out many examples at www.c360.nl/

What Dennis describes in his tutorial is more or less what I do but having it put so cogently is really helpful. Thanks Dennis. Mark

Even though I have not used the H2 yet (have not found a good panorama for that) I did go back to my Europe trip and found a video my daughter took at the Tour de France finish. I pulled part of the sound track out and added it to my pano. www.dlsphoto.net/Europe2009/Paris/Tour_de_France_...
Thanks Smooth for pushing me with your pano of the duck race. Just like panos with people in them are more interesting, sound adds yet another dimension.

Great work Dennis, it really adds to the panorama. Next, directional sound! Jeez, I'd like to be a share holder in the white hat company!

Smooth,
The audio was taken with a camcorder. The microphones are very close together, so you do not get much stereo separation. If you wear headphones, you can hear the channels switch as you pan around. I did purchase a Zoom H2 and cannot wait to use it.
The white hats were free. The seats cost about $300 a pop, so it was the least they could do. Seats 100 yards away from us sitting right on the finish line were only $900 each. If you go about 1/4 mile further up the street, standing along the sideline was free. Once in a lifetime experience.
Thanks for the compliments.
Dennis
