Layer masking
Posted: 26 Apr 2008 at 18:14 GMT
I am playing around with a panorama I made inside a boat, seems to be a popular waste of time lately no? wink
The boat was in a showroom, and apart from the horrible lighting conditions, the view out of the windows was also not the nicest. See Here: www.vamos360.com/temp/boat/pano_enfused_cube_0_eq...
Now I removed the contents of the windows using layer masking, and put a picture of sea and sky behind the pano. The problem is that now it looks like I photoshopped the windows, and put a picture behind them.
Is there any way I can make it look a bit more real? See the result sofar here: www.vamos360.com/temp/boat/pano_enfused_cube_0_eq...

Ronald

Ronald, I think you have ignored a cardinal rule of stitching. I.e. the horizon should be located half way up the equirectangular panorama image - where pitch=0. Because you have positioned the fake background lower, the horizon acquires a curve and it looks like the boat is flying at 5000 feet. Quite a feat!

LOL! yeah, It's a prototype flying boat hehehe.
I will change location of the horizon. But what I actually meant was that it looks like there is no glass in the windows. Is there any trick for that?

Regards,
Ronald

just lighten them up and lower the contrast so they look 'foggy' a bit more, glass causes a haze usually. it's pretty close though as it is.

you might want to have that one window with the mirror image of the clouds a bit different

it looks a bit underwater now though ??!!

Thanx Michael, do you mean the window on the left of the tv? I am also under the impression that it's a bit of a submarine now wink

Ronald, I have to say the seascape is pretty unconvincing. It doesn't match the quality of the interior. The clouds are clearly sunlit yet the brilliant white tops are darker than the interior of the cabin. It just looks unreal. You might get by by brightening it up, but you really could do with a decent 360 panorama taken at sea.

Just a thought; Terragen ( www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/ ) may produce a convincing backdrop if you cant actually get to the ocean. Has been a while since I have used it, but I remember someone posting a full 360 pano of a generated scene.

I like the Titanic on the telly, nice touch laugh

Thanx John,
I have just followed Michael's tip and lowered the contrast + brightened up the background. And i lowered the horizon a bit. To bad there's no clear blue sea around here, just a dirty brown river. I will have to do with artificial background I'm afraid.

Hiya Vilmer, how wide is your pan? I have millions of ocean shots from boats. Also grab the cloan tool, select "colour" from the drop down menu and you will be able to fix the colour in the wood at the prow etc.
have fun

Peter, I will have a look at Terragen, didn't see it before.
I guess the boat dealer will not approve the Titanic on the tv, but for the time being it's ok. Maybe I will throw in some sharks toowink

Hey Dylan,
This pano is at the moment 6612*3306. I don't know which part of the wood needs to be retouched? (Now idea what 'the prow' is blush )
