Sigma 8mm vs Sigma 10-20

I own a Canon 30D and a Sigma 8mm for pano work. I recently bought a Sigma 10-20 for wide angle work and have been impressed with the quality of this lens. I am also looking at consolidating my lens collection and wondered how suitable this lens (10-20) would be for pano work. The software I use is PTGui on a Windows PC.
Anyone have any views or experiences to share.
regards alexis

Alexis, As you probably know, you would need around 17-18 images for a 360x180 using the 10mm lens. You can see four examples in the WWP December event. Links are in the equipment list at timhatch.com/projects/wwp-equipment/data-1206.html . It seems to give good results.

Alexis, There's a lens database at www.vrwave.com that will tell you how many images are needed for a 360x180 pano.

Useful link. Apparently you can get away with 14 shots for this lens but it is still way too laborious in comparison to my 8mm.
Thanx and regards alexis

Hi alexis,
That's one of the reasons why I chose the Sigma 8mm over the Nikkor 10.5mm lens.
Less shots mean less time.
Thanks, eagle

i am using a 10-20mm sigma on a 350D and i need as much as 26 pics, +30 degrees and -30 degrees each having 12 pics with interval of 30 degrees per shot + 1 x zenith and 1 x nadir to be able to properly stich them in PTGui. The zenith is giving quite some problem and seems like i may have to adjust the top degrees higher to have PTGui have more reference?

I just uploaded a 360x180 panorama (my first try) that i took with a Nikon D200 with the Sigma 10-20 and a Panosaurus head.
It's at www.panoguide.com/gallery/172/
I took 18 images: 8 at -30 deg. (every 45 degrees), 8 at + 30 deg., Nadir and Zenith.
I extensively use the Sigma for "normal" architecture shots, and i found it to be VERY sharp, even fully open !
Of course, an 8 mm. fisheye would simplify the job for making spherical panos, but i wouldn't use that lens for anything else, so.... finances first !
Cheers, J-P.
