do you like the krpano distorsion
Posted: 9 Oct 2011 at 22:50 GMT
I feel like the krpano panoramas have a degree of distorsion inside them. I mean, when I start moving around the size of the buildings changes unnaturally.

Is this something krpano likes? I don't see the distorsion in pano2vr. So I am asking myself why do than people go for krpano and not pano2vr(you have 360cities, viewat, all use krpano).

So have 2 questions:
1)do you like better krpano or pano2vr in terms of how the panoramas are displyed
2) what are the key features why you would choose krpano over pano2vr or viceversa

thank yousmile

I think that kind of depends on the projection type chosen by the publisher of the panorama. Try and right-click on those KR-panos and some will give you the option of different projections. Some look 'natural', with correct perspective, others tend to have slightly rounded straight towards the edges of the display.

Ryan, I use KRpano. I have never notice any distortion, that is out of the ordinary for a interactive panorama.
Do you have any examples?

If I understand Ryan right, he means the stretching at the left and right edges of the panorama when rotating around.

Also have the idea myself that there is difference in this stretching for every particular viewer. Why and how to prevent it, I don't know..

As Henri mentioned, it probably has something to do with the projection and it looks like an object at the sides are closer then in the center-front.

I made a little example with circles that get stretched to ovals on the sides to illustrate the effect; www.360panophoto.com/test/stretching.swf

Anybody of the pano experts has a explanation and preventive measures for this effect?

In my experience it has little to do with the player used, and everything to do with how far you set your zoom levels. The further out you're zoomed, the greater the distortion at the edges.

To alleviate it make sure your zoom is at a realistic level.

KRPano default FOV is 90 degrees ( when using their drag and drop tools to create your pano ).

90 does seem a large FOV, I set mine around 70. The size of the display window also has an effect, but I know Pano2vr has settings now to determine where the FOV is measured from. (i.e. diagonal, top to bottom etc).

Not including periperal vision, we have a field of view of about 60 degrees. I see no reason why anyone uses a default fov wider than that. As a matter of fact, I usually set mine at about 55 to compensate for wide-screen monitors, thereby minimalising any peripheral distortion. This means, I suppose, that a higher resolution output is probably needed for zoom purposes.

There is absolutelly no diference between the way you see the pano in Krpano and Pano2vr or FPP or any of the other main viewers as long as you have set them up in the same way.

The reason you may se it different in Krpano is that it has some special extra options for changing the projectiion and some people like it that way.
There are 3 main projections to use, standard rectilinear view as it is normally in Pano2vr.An other option is the arcitectural view which pans vertically with parallel vertical lines until a certain pont of view.
And then you have the fishey projection which you can set to different values from very small effect to what becomes the same as a real fullframe fisheye view.
As Henry said you can also give people the option to change between them from the right click opion.

Details about KRpano projections can be read here; krpano.com/docu/projections/

If I understand right, the distortions are caused by making the 3D equirectangular viewable/fit on 2D rectilinear computer screen (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_projection).
Choosing a larger FOV then approx 60-70 degrees will make the distortion more visible.

It has been told to me that normal human eye field of view is about 50° field of view. Using 50° would zoom in abit.. avoiding the apparant projection 'stretching' on left and right viewer side.
