I've read that the sharpness technology for phone cameras is proceeding much faster currently than that for sensor cameras. No mention in the article was specifically made of DSLRs. What are your opinions on this?

Sensor size and Glass is the main thing in Image Quality, both cannot fit in a phone.. Sharpness (and megapixels) don't say anything about Image Quality!

When you have a small sensor (so this apply to compacts too not only to phones) the result is a greater DOF, that can result in a sharpen image. Sure the glass matter.
