reverse pano/ object movie
Posted: 7 Sep 2011 at 22:45 GMT
Group, I recall seeing a "reverse panorama" (images shot while circling a sculpture outside) a few years ago in one of the Panorama sites. As I remember there was a pretty detailed description of how it was created. If memory serves it was a "pano" of a statue in some sort of outdoor courtyard. Does anyone else remember this and could you share the link?

I've done numerous "object movies" spinning products of various sizes on a turntable so am reasonably familiar with that process. In this "pano" the camera moved around since the sculpture looked like it had been fixed in place for decades. anyone else remember this?

You can move the object or the camera, same basic principle, just different methods.

Not a lot of commercial turntables that can support more than a motorcycle and unless you build your own they are expensive and by default take up a lot of space.

There's really no such thing as a "reverse panorama" it's either a 360 done with a fixed point of view where the scene around you moves, interior of a car or a object 360, or exterior of a car where the object (car) moves.

There are many different ways to circle an object. Most depend on your budget, access, size of object, etc. From just guessing, to a bit of string, GPS, or even a dolly track.

cheers,

Robert

This was done simply by walking around and trying to stay the same distance away.

I used Pano2QTVR to assemble the final object panorama.

Perhaps it was Photosynth? - with which you can do stuff like this:

Dennis,

You never cease to amaze me.

Equipment? How many shots? Were you working from a projected centrepoint, or was there some clever maths in play?

Quite amazing.

Thanks Jon.

I actually shot that so very many years ago when I was first starting out with panoramas. The interior of the house was my very first set of real estate panoramas. www.dlsphoto.net/SchoolerHouse/Schooler.htm Not too bad (and not that great) for a beginner.

I used a really big rotating base buried under the house. No, not really. I used a hand held D200 and a standard lens. I tried to keep the house the same size in the viewfinder as well as the center of the roof line at the same height. Take a picture, move 3 steps to my right, take a picture, repeat until I was back at the start. I then brought all the pictures into Photoshop and edited them in an attempt to keep the house a consistent size and position. Next time I will use a monopod and take only 1 step. It was actually quite an enjoyable project.

i have an exterior shot of a house i did as a test here. files are around 10 mb so it might take a little while on slow connections. took 1 large step same distance from house total around 45 shots.

using krpano you can take all the shots you would use for the object drop them onto 1 tool and it will export you a working object 360. this was completed in literally 10 minutes.

the .mov wont open for me all i get are a bunch of random charactures so i cant see dennis' example

Check your file association. The link is to a .mov file, not an .html.
