Nodal Ninja 5 query
Posted: 8 Jun 2011 at 21:58 GMT
I tried asking this question on the NN forum but it won't let me log-in so I'm asking it here as I know the guys from there read this.

I have a NN5 which I use at the 60 degree setting, ie. 0, 60, 120, 180, etc. Unfortunately, it now lines up with a four degree error so the datum lines up with 4, 64, 124, 184, etc. I don't know what's caused it to slightly misalign.

I guess it still shoots in 60 degree but I'm not happy. Is there an obvious fix?

are you serious ?

If yes, this is a matter how you use software like ptgui etc.
Nothing to do with NN

Hi Gary,

You have to register to log in to the NN forum. As a guest you can read but not place questions.

Where do you read these numbers, on NN5 or in the software?

When you read this on NN5, first make sure you only use the main detent plunger to click in the holes of 60° steps. Set the rotator to 0° and fix it with the big knob. The ring at the bottom with the marks in it has two little hex screws, I think at 90°/180° when I remember right. Use the small little black hex key that came with the set in one of the plastic bags. Open the screws, re-set your ring and fix it at the right position. But be sure to sit at 0° position before you do this.

May be this is your problem.

Perhaps I need to reset this query as I believe only Heinz has go the jist of what I was asking about.

To be more specific, I have a NN5/RD16 which I have been using for two years without any problems. I only use the 60 degree indent. When it is on the click-stop it no longer lines up with the marker on 0, 60, 120, 180, etc on the rotator degree scale, but is four degrees out. The physical alignment has slipped for some unknown reason. I cannot see any screws to effect an adjustment, hence my asking a serious question.

I still cannot get on the NN forum even though I have a confirmation e-mail telling me I have registered and what my user name and password is.

Hi Gary,

The RD16 has a movable index ring. use the hex key provided to loosen the set screws. adjust the ring and lock it again. Don't over tighten the screws though. When you mount/ dismount the RD16 on a tripod, don't grab the index ring. This will avoid displacement of index ring in the future. BTW, the index ring on the upper rotator is also adjustable.

Hi Gary,

the two screws sit at 90º/270º on the index ring.

Before you reset the ring, please test if the problem is the same using other steps like 45º or 90º. When the offset of the ring is always 4º, the index ring has moved.

This might happen as Nick already explained, when you use the index ring during fixing the rotator to your tripod. I fixing my rotator to Ez-LevellerII or tripod, I always fix all the detent and locking knobs on the rotator and try to avoid touching the index ring.

Might be yours has not been fixed tight during assembly and it now came loose and moved. Anyway, easy to fix when you know how to do it.

Many thanks to Nick and Heinz. I obviously wasn't looking closely enough. I would imagine it has worked loose as I often switch it between a tripod and monopod and hand tighten it around the rotator ring.

As for the forum log-in, it won't accept my password. It all went wrong after the change from the old look to the new one.

you have to create a new account for the new forum to log in.

Whole office in Us is still on it's way home from the Pamela conference in Portugal, they will be back on the 13th. Send a mail to the address Nick mentioned to ask a new password.
