D700 plus 14-24mm

G'day all,
I know this is not the most common setup. However, I was looking for some advice on the best solution for shooting the D700/14-24mm combo at 14mm.
From what I have read the most common choices are 6 around at +/- 30 degrees (plus zenith and nadir) or 6 around at 0 degrees and 3 around at +/- 70 degrees (plus zenith and Nadir I assume).
Would be great to hear from anyone who has this setup or similar.
Regards,
Morten

G'day Morten,
I have the D700 & 14-24mm but have never used them for panos. I use the 16mm fisheye on D700 body (6+1).
I do recall reading a test by Hans? on shooting with a 14mm rectilinear on fullframe recently. Might have been Samyang. Was theoretically possible to shoot 6 around horizontal... but don't quote me on that
Thanks, Aaron Spence. panedia.com

Michell has done some tests with the Samyang 14mm which he claimed could do 6 around + 2 zenith straight up + same down.
However the samyang is not 14mm but more like 13.6 or close to and still the overlap was very small.
I have done tests with the Sigma 14mm and there is no way to do the same.
A 14mm is a very bad setup actually because what ever you do with 2 rows you get the seem at the horizont which of course completely disables you from shooting anything with movements at or around the horizont.
The best way I guess is to shoot 8 around at zero + 4 at 45 and 4 at -30
In addition most extreme wideangles have a limited depth of focus because they have a bad focus plain. One review says that also the 14-24mm is affected by this. The worst is the Sigma 14mm which I tested for this specific problem. www.panoramas.dk/panorama/focus/wideangle-focus.h... It means that you have to focus at infinity to get them sharp in the corners.
And the 14-24mm is also one of the heaviest wideangle lenses + it needs very long spherical arm. As far as I remember it needs a setting over 120mm.

Just shot 6 around at +/- 30 degrees + 1 zenith, 2 nadir and one for viewpoint correction. I am using a 360Precision Absolute head.
PTGui seemed to handle this very well. I think this will be a great combo for panos without people or movement.
The only other issue I see is that this bulbous lens is prone to lens flare. If anyone is interested I can link my test at some point.
Regards,
Morten
