What is the best panohead for Nikkon D70 with 10.5mm lens???
Posted: 4 Jul 2005 at 14:44 GMT
Hi everyone,

I am in a bit of a bind here. For a while now I have been trying to research and decide which panohead I should get. I want to build virtual toures and have 360*180 panos of interiors and exteriors of building/house/monuments etc. and I have opted with the Nikkon D70 with the 10.5mm Nikkor lens. Now I am at a point where I must purchase a panohead but do not have the possibility of "testing" one out before I buy it. Money not being a real big problem, what panohead would you all suggest?

Thanks for the help!

With money not being a real big problem smile , I suggest 360 Precision … a dedicated pano head for a certain camera-lens combination.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Will this permit me to do 360@180 with Panoweaver? This is another issue of mine, I have panoweaver and tourweaver. If not, is there a software that you recommend where I can simply input the pictures and the stitching will do itself automatically. I do not want to have to fine tune for hours on end to get optimal results as it will be for clients.

Thanks again,

Joey

I’m not sure if Panoweaver supports or not 6+1 fullframe fisheye images. Try posting in their forum for this info.

360Precision was designed with PTGui in mind … therefore the main goal was repeatability. You can batch stitch the images by using a template because all pics line up precisely.
PTGui has the highest degree of automation … if that’s what you’re looking for.

Realviz Stitcher can handle 10.5mm images, after defishing (rectilinearization).
It’s an expensive software … but it’s user friendly (as opposed to PTGui smile ) and the quality is great.

Download the demos and try them all.

Hi Joey,

I make the 360Precision head, so am incredibly biased when I say its exactly what you are looking for.

We can set you up a batch template to run through PTgui, to give automated results, with no manual intervention.

All the information is on our homepage that VRobject kindly linked too (thanks bud).

If you have any questions feel free to fire away.

Yours,

Stu

I have the same camera and lens and it works great using the Nodal Ninja (SPH-1).
While I too am somewhat bias, as I represent the Nodal Ninja in the US and Canada, I can say it's an excellent contender. At $120 about the only limitation you would have would be in shooting the zenith or up shot. Personally I find that it's best to shot the nadir (down shot) manually to lessen the tripod footprint, so simply swinging the camera around to shot the zenith is easy. You'll also enjoy it's light weight (570 grams) making great for hiking, compact design (folds down to fit in pocket or camera bag, and it's all metal sturdy construction that incorporates "two" line levels. The finish is a pro-looking non-glare black. Great lined carry case too!

My personal guarantee:
Give it a try, if for any reason you are unhappy with the Nodal Ninja simply return it within 30 days. I'll not only issue you a FULL refund, including the original shipping costs, but I'll also pay back the actual shipping costs incurred by you in having to send the unit back.

Hope you consider all choices - good luck!
