Just received the R1/R10 Rotator Ring that Nick is now producing for the NEX series of cameras. It is quite a bit narrower than the Nikon 10.5mm ring, but fits the small lens very well. It is typical excellent NN quality of construction.

No details for the NPP are provided for this lens on the NN website, hence, It was necessary to determine the settings the "old fashioned" way with tape on the front door window. Installed the ring on the NEX 16mm f/2.8 lens with the VCL-ECF1 Fisheye Converter attached and went through the calibration process.

To my surprise, the ring had enough fore and aft range of motion to allow the camera to successfully shoot through the full range of tilt of the R1. Successful stitches were made at +12.5°, level and -15°. Six around plus a zenith and Nadir using the NN Nadir Adapter worked very well. Thanks much, Nick, for this welcome addition to your product line. The NEX and R1 combo make for an easily transportable rig that does a great job.

Below are my calibration settings for the NEX on the Ri. Best to check it for yourself, but this should provide a good starting point.

R-1 Rotator with Sony 16mm f/2.8 and VCL-ECF1 Fisheye Converter
Tilt angle NPP value
+12.5° 0.75
+7.5° 1.15
+5° 1.55
0° 2.15
-2.5° 2.50
-7.5° 3.10
-10° 3.40
-15° 4.00

Can't get back into my previous post to edit, but here's an easier to read calibration chart:

I shot at f11 with a NEX c3. I've taped the fisheye adapter to the 16mm lens to remove the looseness of the mount. Then I taped the focus ring. Focus peaking works ok but not when you are trying to find the hyperfocal point. So I use DMF to focus on something about 8 feet away and then set the camera to MF. This approximates the hyperfocal distance well enough.

Lots of flare. I shoot 3 or 4 toward the sun so I can mask the flare out.

Also, I find the camera tends to over expose so I underexpose by about -0.7 EV and I still have to lower the exposure while converting from RAW.

With the coming new model, you can make multi-row with the 16mm or the 18-55mm. smile
A great companion to R1/10.

what do you need photoshop for? there are plenty of good raw converters out there: Lightroom, Capture 1, Phocus (will even work with Canon), and Apple's Aperture ( I think).
