myPUREpano records movies from panoramas
Posted: 22 Mar 2011 at 22:48 GMT
I was pleasantly surprised today by a mail from Immervision, creators of the PURE player. They have updated their PURE tools program for creating panoramas with a lot of IMHO unneccesary changes, but also a few nice features, of which recording HD (720p) movies from panoramas may well be one of the most wanted. It works a lot easier than programming Pano2Movie or struggling with camera movements in After Effects. Recordings can be uploaded to Youtube or saved in the obscure webm format. myPUREpano is available as a beta preview now on the Immervision website.

It''s nice news after all these years of hearing nothing from Immervision. If only they would also update the PUREplayer modules, give us Iphone support and better visual quality...

It's a bit difficult to deal with Immervision, because it seems that the support guy of the PUREplayer team has retired years ago.... wink

The recording to video would indeed be nice if it was possible to smooth-out the path after it is created. Specially zooming in and out looks a bit jerky.

I too tried the beta and it seems so far they are still in the process of catching up instead of getting ahead in the pano-game. A shame really, I bet they've put a lot of time and effort into it!

Devalvr can do this-zoom-in/out much better obviously. Only for windows at the moment.

Not a recorder, but a new video panorama player is on its way from Kolor. Looks very promising, maybe it will be possible to record by time.

The jerky movements could be caused by your mouse. All movements are pretty smooth on my laptop, where I am using the touchpad and a Wacom Bamboo pen tablet. No need to smooth out anything, maybe just adjust the movement speed in Premiere after recording...

I have noticed though that the zooming keys we know from PURE player (SHIFT and CTRL) do not work while recording a video. Maybe in the final version.

Do you mean I can record movies with DevalVR?

Maybe, but we'll have to wait and see. I also don't like the idea of having to install a beta version of Firefox 4 and all kinds of unknown graphics drivers in order to make a beta version of the Kolor player work. On my laptop, I have tried it, without success.

Try to click and drag with your right mouse button for a smooth zoom.

What a pity Immervision made the decision to only implement the WEBM video format, rendering video recording useless for everyone wanting to edit footage in any serious program like Adobe Premiere. After hours of trying to convert WEBM to something other programs than VLC can read (and preferrably convert to a normal video format), I give up. If this doesn't change, myPUREpano will be nothing more than another missed chance...

I found out that Handbrake (handbrake.fr) can convert webm to mp4 in a decent quality, if you set it to high profile. Super only gives error messages.
