Lightbox in Wordpress
Posted: 30 Oct 2010 at 0:39 GMT
I want to use a Lightbox effect for my Flash panos, where the image expands to fill the screen, and there's an X to close it. I've searched the posts but now I'm more confused.

How do I get started? What's the best code on all browsers?

I'm using PtGui, pano2Qtvr, Panosalado on Wordpress.com websites. Virtual Tour software will come very soon.

Here's where I want to use it first.. I realize this is pretty crude right now.

I once started a wordpress blog on my own domain, and realized I can't be bothered with it soon after I build it. So it's not very maintained but still online.
Anyhow it's at blog.vamos360.com/ and the light/shadow/whatever box I used is Shadowbox JS, you can find it at sivel.net/wordpress/shadowbox-js/
After you installed it, it will open any link you put in an article automagically in a lightbox type popup.

Thanks Ronald, looks pretty easy.
I know what you mean about Wordpress, the biggest problem is keeping up with Wordpress and Plugin upgrades. More than once I've had to totally rebuild a website that crashed.

BTW, very nice panos on your website.

Hey Clay,
Yes, the upgrade stuff used to be kind of tricky, but now you can just click the upgrade button in your control panel and that's it. Don't know if you can use any additional plugins if you have stuff running at wordpress.com.
Thanx for the compliment, I guess they are fine considering I took those with my Peleng.

A word about WordPress.

I think it is excellent, especially if you want to create news articles (blog) and the like, but it is continually changing, as are the plugins. If you set up a WP site (as I have done several times), my advice would be never to upgrade it unless it becomes very obsolete.

The reason? Well, often the development of plugins does not keep up with the development of WordPress and this often results in some favoured plugins never working again.

Unless you want to add new and exciting gimmicks to a WP website (and they often are little other than that, something of which we tire very quickly), I would always advocate keeping with an installation that you know is sound.

Thanks everyone,
Jon, I update my Wordpress the same way I update my PC OS... when I'm forced to.

I installed lightbox-js and its working well for images and QTVR but not for my exported panosalado tours.

I have Pano2Qtvr and Panosalado Spin Control (I know, I know.. not the best). Is there any way to run my existing Spin Control tours or is it finally time to buy Pano2VR?

For information:

Its time. Go ahead and download a trial version of Pano2vr 3 beta 3 (updated today 30Oct10). It is full functioning. The only thing the trial does is place a watermark on the output file. Possibly you will like its function versatality and skin editor (with premade sample toolbars controls skin sets).

There are video tutorials.

Single user version.

The Pano2vr Forum is very active.

Try Prettyphoto (and have a look at the docs): wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-prettyphoto/

@iam360Texas: the WP lightbox plugin is still missing in the features of Pano2VR... wink

Not familiar with light box. We have used Shadowbox to dispaly Pano2vr Flash panoramas with success. Maybe Shadowbox function is not the same as Lightbox content.

Sorry

the original "lightbox" does not handle swf files, although many clones do

prettyphoto, colorbox, shadowbox & others handle swf files, and are available as easy to install wordpress plugins, although some might require manually adding the rel="whateverbox" bit to your links

adding swf+xml content to lightbox clones is doable too, but stand alone swf from pano2vr is easier, i've cooked up a wp shortcode for krpano which should be easy to adapt to other swf+xml pano content - krpano.com/forum/wbb/index.php?page=Thread&thread...

keeping your wordpress install up to date is a really good idea, running a 2 year old version will likely open your site to whatever vulnerabilities & exploits that have been fixed in more recent versions, not to mention admin interface updates, new feature like post thumbnails, etc - and several small steps are usually easier than one large one, when the inevitable update day comes...

keeping your wp install up to date is a good thing, and is quite simple, updating recent versions of wp are done via an update button in the admin, same for plugins, themes, etc

old versions of wp & plugins can also be broken by server change of php version, etc, its like the old advice to drink before you are thirsty, don't wait till you are fired to look for a new job, etc, don't wait for your website to crash to fix it smile

backing up and restoring or moving a wp site is also very simple, just export a backup file through the admin & grab your wp-content folder & wp-config file via ftp - this will allow you to restore a hacked or crashed site in minutes - just import your backup file & restore wp-content & wp-config, and thats it smile

best to avoid installing too many plugins in wp, as jon said there will inevitably be some plugin broken by a new version of wp, although there are many plugins which work fine despite being several years old - but do try to avoid using too many, there will inevitably be some conflict somewhere, try to resist the urge to instal too many plugins…

www.samrohn.com has been running on wp since its beginning, i've found wordpress to be an excellent platform for maintaining a panorama portfolio type website, very active devs so bugs etc are zapped right away, a HUGE and very helpful user community, and countless tutorials just a google search away, i consider wordpress to be one of the very best bits of software i've ever used in any category

btw, yes, some of the panos on my old nylocations site are broken, this site is about to undergo a bit of renovation...

Thanks Sam,

It seems the guys/gals doing the best work are also the most generous and helpful, thanks a lot.
I will rethink my habit of waiting to update Wordpress. And...if you don't mind my asking, which lightbox clone do you use with your Wordpress site.

thanks clay

i use a lightbox clone called lightview, but i'm looking at colorbox and prettyphoto lately too, i may switch soon

i actually link to a php (could also be html) page which has the pano embedded rather than to the swf itself, so any clone that allows inline content (lightbox contains another webpage) should work, this will allow fullscreen, alternate iphone content, etc

hi Folks:

i try to implement pretty photo plugin in my wordpress.
the pretty photo has been installed and activated correctly.

however it didn't work when i tried to embed a flash or even a single photo... ? the flash or photo could launch successfully but without any light box effect? the codes i inserted in the post is as follows. is this the right way to do it ?
------------------------------------------------------

<head>
<script src="js/jquery.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="css/prettyPhoto.css" type="text/css" media="screen" charset="utf-8" />
<script src="js/jquery.prettyPhoto.js" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>
</head>

<body>

single photo
<a href="www.allfreelogo.com/images/vector-thumb/cute-monk..." rel="prettyPhoto" title="This is the description"><img src="www.allfreelogo.com/images/vector-thumb/cute-monk..." width="60" height="60" alt="This is the title" /></a>

flash
<a href="www.my360vr.com/vr/2009countdown/2009countdown.sw..." rel="prettyPhoto[flash]" title="Flash 10 demo"><img src="www.allfreelogo.com/images/vector-thumb/cute-monk..." alt="Flash 10 demo" width="60" /></a>

<script type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8">
$(document).ready(function(){
$("a[rel^='prettyPhoto']").prettyPhoto();
});
</script>
</body>

If I remember right, PrettyPhoto likes to load an html page. You could try that with the flash embedded into the page. You will need to set up an html folder on your server and point the source to that.
