I just installed Safari on my W7 machine and would like to see how HTML5 plays panos.

hummm... the HTML5 version does work in Safari on W7.
I have general criticisms of the interface in both Flash and HTML5 but it would be boring to air them.
Any others?????

Hi Ken,
I posted links to a bunch of them intended for Ipad and larger screens on the Pano2VR forum:
gardengnomesoftware.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t...
The HTML pages themselves are VERY basic, it's just about the image quality, not the interface (yet).

I looked at the largest one -- Plymouth Harbour -- same comments as in the PTGui forum. Little slow on loading but once loaded, just the same performance as Flash -- maybe a little smoother. The button to change the mouse action from drag the image to move the viewpoint is essential.

It was news to me (thick as I am) ... but supposedly there are NO HTML5 panoramas existing.
What is being done, and incorrectly labeled as HTML5 panos, are "webkit" panos. There is absolutly no guarantee that all browsers will pick up the ability to play/handle these special panos, that are currently only viewable on Safari browsers.
Of course the iDevices need to have some ability to view panos, since Flash has been disabled in them, but from there, and to assume (as I did) that all HTML5 browsers will be able to handle the current "html5" panos, is probably never going to happen. It is not a new global standard, but it is becoming a standard for iDevice pano viewing... which is of course a different thing.
Before these things get too common, and we all get used to naming them incorrectly, I think it would be a good thing we call them by the right name:
"webkit panos" or "Safari mobile panos" (which would be misleading, since it's not only for mobile devices).

Very good performance! These HTML5 pages can be measure with www.fraps.com , I see 46 FPS and few CPU usage, so, Safari is using hardware acceleration to show the images. Very good.
I see a near future with rich contents in all browsers without plugins...
regards!

What if plugins also start using the GPU? I know the reviled Java JVM is working towards that end. What's keeping Adobe from making a version of Flash that has GPU capability?
If the GPU is available to WebKit (or whatever) why can't other graphics software use it?

No doubt they will, there's already a beta Flash plugin that uses GPU acceleration, but it only works with IE9 (beta) on Win7.

The standard 10.1 uses Hardware acceleration on Mac if the Graphic Card supports it.

All Graphic Cards support 3D Hardware Acceleration since more than 10 years. MacOSX uses OpenGL and all graphics cards around the world support at least OpenGL 1.2 (released in 1998). I don't know why, but Adobe is sleeping...
