Hi,
Took this zenith of an interior shot I did earlier.
Here's my exif:
Device: Nikon D700 Lens: 16mm F/2.8D Focal Length: 16mm Focus Mode: Manual AF-Area Mode: Single AF Fine Tune: OFF Aperture: F/8 Shutter Speed: 1/1.6s Exposure Mode: Manual Exposure Comp.: +1.0EV Exposure Tuning: Metering: Matrix ISO Sensitivity: ISO 200
What should I do next time to prevent those spots? Is it because of the lens I am using?
Thanks, Edwin

Clean the lens. Both front and back. I doubt that the Nikkor 16mm fisheye actually does produce this.

Wow, I had no idea Dairy Queen was also in the Phillipines? They closed most of them around Seattle. Not the best weather around here I suppose for that sort of thing.

hi Hans,
actually, my copy has small markings on the front element. like raindrops, permanent. got this really cheap from a friend.
it does not usually show on regular outdoor shots. will try another indoor zenith shot with ceiling lights.
thanks, edwin

Edwin,
that's the reason why you get this result. I do not get this on my 16mm nikkor.
May be you ask a Nikon Service point to have a look at it. Now you know why I asked you to take a testshot with a second hand lens in the other thread

Hi Heinz,
I just finished another shot this morning. Shooting the same store(different branch), the spots were crazy. I was shooting at F8, infinity. I opened the aperture to F6.3, and noticed that the spots were reduced. Lowered to F4, still some signs of spots, at F2.8, their gone.
conclusion, the marks/tiny specs (not scratches) on the front element is the culprit. open wide, obviously they will not show on the photo.
i'm hoping the 2.8 shots are sharp enough for a VR. if not, would probably need to spend time on cleaning up the spots in post-processing...
thanks! edwin

Edwin You should try take the zenit at a different pitch. You can use anything from 65 to 90 with the 16mm. Or you can take 3 at 45 or 60.

Edwin,
may be you try to clean the lens with a pre- moistened microfiber cloth softly by doing it several time to remove layer per layer.
Have a look to this: www.panoguide.com/forums/qna/8519/

If the spots are not scratches there is no problems cleaning it. Water drops can be quite resistant to clean but you can use distilled water or iso-propanol for cleaning your lens. Just use a clean microfiber cloth.
People are far to afraid of cleaning lenses. The glass and the coatings are very resistant and all the warnings you sometimes find about it are not at all true. I have cleaned lenses daily for the last 40 years when using them and I never seen any lens been damaged by it. Read Bob Atkins advice, he is one of the Pros you can trust.
