Nikon D-Lighting Feature
Posted: 7 Sep 2010 at 19:58 GMT
I have an older model Nikon D70s that does not have D-Lighting feature that the newer models have. I shoot most of my shots with 3 exposure bracketing and merge to get good shadow/highlights.

Would the D-Lighting feature in newer cameras be a substitute to needing to do exposure bracketing?

Can Software post processing achieve the same D-Lighting results that the camera's built-in feature can do?

Is D-Lighting feature the same on all Nikon cameras?

My Nikon D5000 has the D-Lighting option. I tried it on a few pano projects but wasn't happy with the results. I found it really difficult to estimate in the field what strength is needed.

I shoot 3 bracketed shots as NEF. I usually edit in Nikon Capture NX2, using its far superior D-Lighting adjustments. NX2 offers fine-tuning and an excellent masking feature called U-Point selection.

After using NX2, I've never again bothered with in-camera D-Lighting.

In-camera D-Lighting might be fine for family, pet or holiday snapshots where you only have time for one quick shot and aren't too fussy about the outcome. For panorama work I haven't found it useful.
