In the last few days, i have read in one or two posts the reference to using post it notes to improve the control points in stitching our Panos.
would someone who uses this technique kindly provide a bit more information.
cheers Sid

Sid I use Blue Masking Tape to do the same thing
If you have a scene that doesn't have a lot of detail in some of the overlapping areas, like plain ceiling, you just put a Post It Note on the wall or ceiling
I use Blue Masking Tape because the adhesive is stronger than Post It Notes
After you stitch the images together, you edit out the Note or Tape in Photoshop

Hi, Tried different things, post-its blew away outside. Tape worked but the roll got, old/beatup after a while. For my purposes, I now use blue adhesive putty. It sticks pretty well to surfaces. The nice thing is that it is flexible and comes in a really small package.

Sid,
Basically just as said in other replies, it is to help the program get the right walls or ceiling while stitching.
Imagine an entirely white room with just one painting on single wall. PTgui might have hard time finding the right photo to match the walls, beside the one with painting, throwing very odd stitching results. Or similar looking walls and a ceiling fill up with mosaic. From personal experience while photographing a hotel conference room. I try to correct the control points but the mosaic was identical regardless which way you look, confusing me which sides I was looking it. I had to painfully and long looking for some very unique details of differences to find and use as the control points. Now, I stick post-it in random spots which allow me easily identify the surfaces of walls etc... making the stitching much easier because even the program itself, find those unique characteristics and sort and control points easier.
Do agree on the "flying away" while outdoor problem. Masking tape can be good alternate. I use it only due to its vibrant colors and the fact that I have plenty of it
