running locally
Posted: 8 Mar 2010 at 22:31 GMT
running locally krpano multires spherical panoramas works a lot worse than running them on-line. does anybody know why and what can be done?
my goal is to setup a large lcd or projector to run the panoramas in a gallery, from a decent desktop computer without an internet connection. decent means consumer.
thank you,
misu

misu

What do you mean by 'works a lot worse'?

I mean that the image is blocking and tearing while moving. the movement is not smooth as should be.

What's the size of the panoramas?

the panoramas are 20000/10000px.
they are running ok on-line but not from my desktop. I even tried running them from a different partition on the same hard disk but as I said when you move there is blocking and image tearing.

With that size you have them divided in a lot of tiles. You do not say anything about your screen size or how much Ram, you have and not even what processor.
Also what are you actually doing. Is it an auto tour which contains both zoom in and out and panning or are you just doing a 360 pan at default FOV.

If you just want a standard autorun pan you should make it to a size of maximum 1500x1500 cubefaces. That will run fine on most computers.

With the size you use and if you zoom in and out you will have the browser loading and unloading images all the time.

as a reference this is the standard quality that I will produce: youngminds.ro/pano/bastion%202.html. you have already seen this, I posted it for testing. I might go even further with the zoom in option, increasing the resolution. the image needs to be very detailed. I use a consumer asus laptop, dual core 2.1, 3gb memory and ati video card with 256mb of memory; this is enough when I run the panoramas on-line.
I intend to use 1920/1200 lcd, ~50" lcd, connected to a laptop or desktop computer.

Those dreadful animated hotspots steels your processor.

Even when the pano is idle it uses 104% of my processors.
I have a similar sized pano at panoramas.dk here
www.panoramas.dk/2009/obama-nobel-prize.html

It is 24000x12000 and it uses only 17% when it is idle
It performs acceptable even on my old PPC Mac. Your pano is however very hard to pan because of the additional processor use.

ok. I will lose those hotspots. I don not like them anyway and I will use a map. but how about locally vs. on-line difference? do I need to setup my laptop as a server? I thought about all sorts of solutions, as the problem does seem to be related to the panoramas.

If you have differences online/offline there must be something special with your computer.

I suppose you do not load them from a CD but from a harddisc.

Have you tried different browsers?

I tried mozilla and windows ie. they behave the same. I wonder if a standard media player, not necessarily wmp, but other third party, like vlc, could play these panoaramas.

Have you tried the DevalVR player? Either the browser plugin or the standalone player. I find it uses much less processor power than Flash.

Just noticed you're talking about multires panos, so my previous post won't help.

if you are having problems locally and not online there must be some other issue. i doubt the motion hotspots cause much of an issue unless the pc is older than sin.

i have your link and hans link open at the same time and IE is using 150mb of ram but only 1-4% cpu. i am using a compaq nc8430 laptop. i have a huge multirez at home and have never experienced what you are describing and i use krpano everyday. everything runs smoother locally than online, always.

if i open my taks manager and spin your tour around in cirlces it uses from 50-80% cpu. idle it uses 1-2% hans images gives exactly the same results. 50-80% and 1-2% idle. hotspots have no effect at least on my pc.
