Decision about Canon 5D Mark II
Posted: 8 Mar 2010 at 17:38 GMT
Hello Eveyone,

Hope all is well with everyone. I am having a hard time making a decision.

I currently have a Sony A100 with a Samyang 8mm Fisheye that is working great. The quality of my shoots are great but I have a shoot coming up that requires me to shoot elevated at about 18 feet. I've purchased a manfrotto giant stand and it is solid holding the sony. I fire the camera through a RF remote. Problem is I don't have a live view capability hence upgrading the camera.

I've looked at the Sony 550 which is still an APS-C system at 14MP. Has live view and costs about $1000.00

My other option is to take the plunge and move to full frame. Unfortunately Sony's A900/850 doesn't have live view and although you can tether shoot you cannot shoot directly from the camera while attached to the computer. Silly system if you ask me.

Anyway I've looked at the Canon 5D Mark II and it looks like a better option for Full Frame but I am struggling with the fact that I have Sony Lenses and now have to buy Canon Lenses.

Finally the question. What is a good lens that won't break the bank but will get me the quality?

Is it possible to change out the mount on the Samyany 8mm for Sony and convert the mount to Canon? Is it that simple or is it too complicated?

Any help is always appreciated.

Why do you need the life view.
I can not see why that is a must just because you take it from a high view.
There is no problem rotating it precise enough even for 4 around.

Of course the zenith may be a a problem if you have something important there.

Hi Hans,

Thanks for the response. I was thinking the issue was more around the fact that if I completed my shoot and the angle or the exposure is all wrong then I could at least spot using the live view and then change it. I think it would be a real pain if the angle or the exposure is all wrong and you have to keep dropping the mast to get access to the camera.

How are are you doing it?

Robert,

I'm with Hans on this, why do you need to see?
I can see your point on angle and composition for a single shot, but for panos the reality so long as the mast/tripod is relatively level you can correct real levels in PTGui.

When you buy outside of the major two I.E: Nikon and Canon or Canon and Nikon if you prefer. You are limiting yourself and the amount of products and opportunities that exist. That's not to say other brands are worse or better. It's just your options become limited.

Consider things like the Promote or GPS www.promotesystems.com or Gigtube
www.aputure.com/en/product/gigitube_wireless_digi...

The Canon 5D MKII is a fine camera and very hard to beat for the money. But you will be buying all the lenses again!

Absolutely true.

I am happily stuck with Olympus, and really like what I get with that brand. At the same time I am fully aware of the limitations... there are better cameras out there, more availability of service and 3rd party products and spare parts and prices are more competitive (lower).... but that hasn't resulted in me changing.

I see it like this:
My Oly is my wife.
I love my wife.
There are many other wives out there, many are beautiful and skilled and capable of things my wife probably never even heard of.... but so be it.
I love my wife, and she's my choice, regardless of all the other possible wives out there.
She's mine, and I am hers.

That's why I haven't felt any need or urge to switch to other brands. I was in contact with Promote systems some months ago, hoping to be able to help them make Oly's compatible with their system, but after initial tests for them, I haven't heard more. It would be great to be able to use Promote on Olys as well, but it isn't... and I can live with that.

A safe and a wise choice for professional photography, is to go for either Nikon or Canon, since you can get "everything" for those cameras. Buying Hasselblad for $60.000 is another choice... but I doubt that you could find spareparts or even qualified service for it in most places in the world.

If you are happy with your Sony, you should stick to that brand, especially since you already have lenses for it, and you know how to use it in the best possible way.

All very good points everyone. I knew I'd get an honest answer from all of you. I do like my camera and my lenses. Unfortunately I couldn't afford the Canon or Nikon systems and at the time for what i was doing Sony seemed to be the logical choice.

The quality is there in the images. For me it would be a big gamble and a learning curve to move to such a highend camera. As one person said to me today if you want to print wall paper go to full frame. The APS-C is great for what I am doing. Quote from an honest salesperson.

I'll take a look at some of these options that Smooth recommended.

Thanks Eveyone,
