equipment used for panoramas & VT- new user
Posted: 4 Mar 2010 at 9:25 GMT
Hello all,
I know this question is answered 100 times on this forum, but I would like to ask all of you, if you could write down your setup in a simple answer(meaning camera-lens-tripod-software.. etc) which one you are using for your pano work. Please write down the + and - of it too.
That will help a lot to do more research, especially for new users like mesmile
thank you and god bless.

Yes, certainly!

Nikon D300s
Nikon 10,5 mm
Cable release (sorry, but that is not as glib as it sounds)
Manfrotto tripod
Nodal Ninja 3
Enfuse Gui (freeware)
Photoshop CS4 for retouching, shadow/highlights, etc
Pano2vr (you can see the results with this on the examples page of tactus360.com)

Er . . .

I think that is all.

If "all" replied, you would have over a thousand responses. To get an idea of what equipent is being generally used for VR panoramas, you might like to peruse the equipment breakdown statistics for the World Wide Panorama quarterly events at:

timhatch.com/projects/wwp-equipment/

The WWP site is at:

Looking at stats for December 2009 I don't believe they can be considered a true reflection of the 'real world'.

IOW I don't think WWP contributors can be considered representative of the wider 'population' of pano shooters, any more than are the members of this forum.

There is no single setup that is 'ideal' for every type of pano shooting/production.

For example, you would choose very different setups for shooting sphericals of interiors for real estate marketing on the Web, and for shooting high resolution partial panos of distant landscapes destined for 'art photography' large prints, and a different setup again if you needed a very compact and lighweight pano setup for 'documenting' hiking/trekking in the wilderness.

I think you might find it more helpful to describe as precisely as you can what you are seeking to achieve WRT pano photography and to ask for suggestions about hard and software that will best assist you reach those goals.

I have several setups:

1. The spherical shooting setup - Nikon D40 with IR remote, Nodal Ninja 5L, Nikkor 10.5mm F, Sigma 8mm f3.5 FE.

Used for simple sphericals destined for Web display. Most items bought used. The Nikon D40 was chosen as (at the time) the least expensive DSLR that would be 'good enough' to produce a 360x180 with sufficient resolution for fullscreen display of pano on the Web. It lacks any AEB, but most DSLRs AEB capability is inadequate for pano shooting anyway. I chose the NN5L over the NN3 (and this was before the new generation of R-Dxx rotators) beacuse I felt it offered the 'headroom' to accommodate just about any DSLR body and lens I might ever consider using for pano shooting.

2. The robotic pano head setup - Nikon D40 with gentled-Jump IR trigger, Merlin + Papywizard robotic pano head controlled from Nokia N800 Internet tablet, Nikkor 50mm f1.8D.

Used for higher res. partial panos and have plans to try high res. sphericals. Merlin + Papywizard completely automates the taking of many shots and works well in conjunction with Autopano Giga to stitch these large panos which may incorporate many relatively 'featureless' images. This setup is quite low cost for the capability it offers.

3. The compact, lightweight 'snapshot' pano setup - Nikon P5100 compact, UR-E20 adapter tube, Nikon FC-E8 FE convertor, Bophoto pano bracket, photo-hiking pole as lightweight 'monopod' with Manfrotto pole level.

Used for 'snapshot' panos, 4-around. Very compact and lightweight and relatively discreet setup. Produces 360x180 panos but these are not really high enough res. for fullscreen display. Fine for situations where a larger setup would be impractical.

4. The 'retro' collection of Kaidan single axis pano heads and Nikon Coolpix cameras (995, 5000 and 4300) with a variety of Nikon conversion lens (FC-E8, WC-E63 and WC-E68).

I am a bit of 'sucker' for 'old technology' and these items very much represent the best of their era - and of course work as well as they ever did. All acquired used and most cost me relatively little except for the FC-E8 FE convertors which can still command quite a high price.

WRT software I use Autopano Giga for stitching which comes bundled with Autopano Tour a GUI front-end/XML generator virtual tour authoring tool for krpano. I also have an unlimited domains license for krpano which is required to get the best out of APT. And of course I have a collection of image editing and drawing software.
........
Oddly enough the camera I probably use most often - not for panos of course - is a tiny Casio Exilim M20 fixed focus 2MP camera that I always have in my pocket.
........
I am just a hobbyist - not a pro.
