HTML5 panoramas are a part of the future. That is going to be a fact.

Hopefully WebGL[1] takes off so we can have a spherical panoviewer without any browser plugins. Btw: I remember reading about javascript based spherical panorama viewer that works on about all current browsers, anyone have any more info about that?

Give it a few years before this matters much.

There's lots of Java viewers -- I got one too.
The problem with Java is that it doesn't run on pretty much anything unless you are willing to put some time into making sure it runs on your machine. And that takes more knowledge than the average person has given that many people can't even figure out how to click/drag the mouse to move a pano.

I have one of those sisters who upon being instructed to click a button on screen (just a normal "continue" button in an application), she asked "How?"
I told her to use the mouse to do it.
She brought the mouse up to the monitor and tried to click the button that way.
Until and beyond that point, she didn't like computers at all...

There is no perfect solution to showing panoramas on the web. Flash is clearly the best now.
30 years ago, Fortan was the best computing solution and it was done on 24 lines by 80 character terminals.
Things change. Don't fret it. Just go with what is currently the best.
I used to be a Java programmer -- now I'm not....

If you want to see what the latest from Prof. Dr. H. Dersch have a look at his PTViewerNG and yes it is HTML5 with 3D Canvas. You can see it here webuser.hs-furtwangen.de/~dersch/PTViewerNG/PTVie... .Again you'll need to make sure you have a browser that can handle this as it's all so new (I've been using the nightly builds of Firefox 3.7). It really starts to show what can be done in the browser. It's a case of watch this space here comes the future.

Personally, I think JavaScript programming is the hardest thing to do on the web. Then add in the difficulty of doing things like going fullscreen and progress bars and nice looking buttons and controls and hotspots and and and...
And you are looking at one hellish task....

biggest problem of flashplayer is the need for administrators rights to be installed. a lot of our potential customers surfing with admin-rights do not know to switch to admin.-account. and the ones surfing with adnmin.-rights are even not aware how dangerous this is. in restricted account devalvr can be installed. when avi-support is implemented then we see a bright future showing our panos, e.g. video inside panos. until now in FF, flashplayer for IE!!! must be installed. i found this out and fiero confirmed. michael przewrocki

flash is more common than anything other viewers and is more commonly already installed even on coporate networked PCs than quicktime and users mostly aren't allowed to install anything let along devalvr.
