I notice may photographers print their names on their online images, but it often spoils them somewhat. What do you guys do?

I try to watermark all my images. If they are on Flickr etc. they get a ©2010 and my name or company name. Nothing will stop this theft and that's really frustrating. I've had images stolen from my site and used on another site. Lawyers cost money and the bad guys know it. I also try to hide a few other ©'s around in the image, just in case. There was recently an incident where a college student had stolen some images and claimed them as their own and the professor said it was OK, because the original photographer was not famous. I guess you have to be famous to beat it?

Hello Jonesy! I guess it goes with the territory then. With the myriad of sites out there, how do you find out if your images have been copied, and by whom? ie which sites?

for my wifes photography website we use flash picture viewers. cannot right click and copy an image from an swf file. I guess they could take a screenshot but the resolution would be low. that is where the watermarks come into play.

Honestly there isn't much you can do. The Chinese can replicate cars, that's how far copyright infringement goes, and how they get away with THAT? just amazing. Lets not forget, those big automotive companies have all the resources to fight it legally, yet they don't. So you can imagine, when comes to Photo copy right, it's just a waste of time to even bother to pursue.

One way I could think off, when comes to photos, would be to develop some kind of style, style that is so unique, that no matter who use your image, most of the people will know where it came from.

The "copied" cars in China are fabricated under license from the big known car companies.
So this is NOT just "copy and produce similar cars" kind of deal. They often have the same components, same engines etc.
Jeep licensed Mahindra in India and Korando in South Korea (produced by Dong-A).
This is normal business model in the car industry. No cheating, no stealing... just new branding for new markets.
Copyright STILL matters, and stealing is STILL a criminal offense. Some professor saying (if true) that stealing from an unknown photographer is ok, does not make it ok. It only rubber stamps said professor as an idiot, who would never be able to get a job as a judge or an honest police officer. Stealing is stealing, and that is what it is.

I agree, the professor was very wrong and should not be allowed to teach at all.
The reason I knew my images had been stolen and used else where? It was in the same market. The guy who did it wasn't very smart and was trying to do the same type of marketing business in the same city. He copied images from the company I work for and used them on his own site. He truly had a weird way of looking at things. Anyway, I made screen shots of all his page containing my stolen images and kept a record of everything. My boss said that it wasn't worth the effort to go after him and he would eventually go out of business, which he did. I wish I would run into him some where, but I think he has left town.

You might be able to trace him on Facebook, esp if you knew where he is from. Also, that professor may well have published books. I'd note them down, then ask him/her if it is ok to copy them and post them on the net as he/she is unknown?

I'm not altogether clear what watermarks look like. Could someone send me a link to an example?

tallmanirl Think of of a text layer over the picture with 50% opacity merged down
Pretty much ruins the pic
To discourage people from stealing it, I placed the text in the header panorama on VirtualAlbuquerque.com down into the mountains on purpose so no one could just cut it out of the sky or paint over it with blue sky.

In my opinion, your other technique to discourage people from stealing it, works better.

Trausti I'd use the watermark for a collection of large thumbnails on a gallery page, maybe higher rez popups from the thumbnails.
The panorama/header on VirtualAlbuquerque.com serves a different purpose; its he title image of the site

Theft of images IS a real problem. On a too regular basis there pop up reports of stolen panos and then there are all the millions of images stolen/used without permission every day. Encryption of images and disabling right click saving of the visible content, does not stop people from copying the content on the screen and thereby have a (low res) copy of the content.... so there will "always" exist the possibility for thieves to steal what they desire... in one way or another.

I agree with Trausti. Any resource that the browser displays directly to its location on the server is public and can be copied in any way

Yes... if there is no added security, such as encryption of the images, then one can simply pick those up from one's cache/temporary internet files folder, or even directly from the server.
With encryption, the images will however be invisible if one copies those to ones computer, or picks them up from the cache/temporary internet files folder, and will be completely useless.
This is a feature we are putting the last hand on for FPP works, under the name Pano Cocoon. ... with other security features as well. flashificator.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=2261
Will be available for purchase by Monday.
