Stitching Problems & Some Basic Questions
Posted: 3 Aug 2009 at 9:25 GMT
Hi Everyone,

After being inspired(and lots of help) by this forum I have finally collected a basic kit. I have got a Canon EOS 450D , Sigma 8 mm f3.5, manfrotto 055XPROB and Agnos MRotator UT. I quickly shot a few images and tried stitching them using PTGui but I am unable to get good stitch. Here are the source images and stitched images(reduced sizes). sharesend.com/bwpw1
Can anyone help in solving these issues or what I might be doing wrong? I am completely new to photography(this is my first camera) as well and I also have a couple of questions :

Why is FOV less..is it because I don't have a full frame or is it because of something I am doing wrong?
How many images do I need for a 360 * 360 panorama using this kit? I thought 4 + 2 would be enough
As you can see..mostly the stitcher turns the imagess upside down and I have to rotate the image..Why does that happen? Any side effects of this?
Is my NPP correct? I used the following technique :
vimeo.com/4266804
and i did it with the radio antenna & the window grills as seen in the picture..
After I have loaded the source images in PTGui should I crop the images? I tried using that also but not much help.
Does NPP change with aperture ?

Some General Photographic Questions :
I find lack of clarity in these images(even in full sized versions). I shoot in Aperture priority mode and I am trying to find a setting to keep everything in focus. Can someone please review the photos and share some tips/settings in general.
I realized that flash was accidentally on in the pictures that i have shared..so I need to correct that.

Thanks a lot.

Before you go any further you MUST remove the lens "ring" as well as the lens cap. Simply pull it forward with the lens cap still in place.

Indre,
Im a long way off the standard of the guys and gals in this forum myself, so i will leave the advice for them...While your waiting though, I have run your images through ptgui, cant make a 360x180 without the nadir and zenith obviously, however the stitch came out reasonable for me.

I cropped the images then manually placed 3-4 control points.

While its probably easier to ask, the answers you want now and will have as you improve, have more than likely been answered on this site.
Happy hunting

Welcome to the Club of Sigma 8mm Idiots.

You do not need to feel stupid because of forgetting to remove the lenscap.
There is a lot of Pano photographers in the club including me even if I am not on the list here .

I suggest you use f/8 rather than f/4 for sharper results, and give all the images the same exposure in manual mode: i.e. same f/no, shutter speed, and white balance (not auto). This makes blending easier.

@Smooth
thanks for pointing out. Being my first time with dslr and lenses I didn't know that the front part was a cap(I didn't get manual for the lens from my dealer)

@Dan Moylan
your stitch is quite nice. I didn't give control points manually..will try this as well. thanks! I did read archives and how tos, but had to share the work to know all the mistakes that I might be doing. will go through them again.

@Hans
thanks now I can avoid the other 12!

@Jorgen
Well if thats what it takes, then I better join all the clubs asap laugh

@John
thanks for the valuable tips! Well explained.

@Everyone
Can someone tell from the pictures if my NPP is correct or if the technique is correct? I used the radio antenna on the bed and the window grill behind it as two objects to be aligned.

Will correct the errors and post the updated work for review soon.

thanks again everyone.

The head setup is quite good, but could be better. There's appreciable parallax shift between the near window frame and the one visible in the distance:

It would be more accurate to move the antenna closer to the camera (no more than 50cm away) and check for parallax shift between that and the window in the far distance. That way you get a more obvious shift. You should also rotate the head from one detent position to the next when doing this, i.e. from yaw -45 to yaw +45. Use Liveview to do the compare, or take two shots and compare in Photoshop.
