Anyone ever tried the Sigma 8mm with a 1.4 extender on a full frame 5D?

Could this be a space saving option if I want to take more detailed panoramas with the Sigma 8mm on a full frame?
What would a picture look like?
Thanks, Adriaan

I am curious, in what way do you mean "space saving"? I would think that by attaching a 1.4 teleconverter you would effectly have a 12mm lens, which would require at a guess, 2 extra shots. I suppose this would give slightly greater resolution to the final pano, but I doubt if it would improve overall quality by much, if any. But, I could be wrong about that and way off track, ,,,But I am used to that

That is exactly the point, although my hope was it would give a final picture with more detail. So the extra shots wouldn't be wasted effort.
It is just that on 8mm you don't make much use of the 5D's 21mp resolution. I like the 180 degree view the 8mm gives when people are involved. But for static subjects I could have a smaller angle and take more shots.
Space saving I mean I wouldn't need to carry another lens (tokina 10-17) and another ring on the Nodal ninja R1.

I've been shooting 18mm-30mm. Taking more pictures isn't much of a problem since the programs do most of the work. I stitch 130-190 pictures often (bracketed). It can take quite awhile to process though.
The outcome is much different. The movement of the pano more resembles video with less warping.

Ad Bo Just how much resolution do you think you need?
With your 21mp sensor the circular part of the images are about 9mp each and should be able to produce equirectangular projections over 10,000 x 5,000 pixels
Realisticly, how much space would you really save by not carrying the Tokina? Seven or 8 cubic inches?
Does the 1.4 extender maintain all the electronic connections? Or does all the communication between the Sigma 8mm and the 5D stop?

@Doug, I think you made a little miscalculation, the equirectangular size when using the Sigma8 on the EOS 5DMKII is much less, it is approx. 7400x 3700 px so using a 1.4 extender on the Sigma8 should deliver much more resolution, approx. 11200x5600 px.
@ Ad Bo Although the use of the extender is a workaround for saving space and money (the costs for the Tokina 10-17, plus the costs for the NodalNinja Tokina ring, minus the costs for an extender will give a positive saving) I doubt if the results with the extender will be really satisfying because the optical resolution of the combination of lens and extender will be less then the sensor resolution and for sure the image quality of the combination will be less then the Tokina 10-17.
So my advice is, don't go cheap and do yourselve a favor and buy a Tokina 10-17 lens, many are using this lens (shaved) on a 5DMKII and are happy with the results. Very soon the NodalNinja ring for the Tokina10-17 will be released so don't let the fact that the ring isn't avalaible yet be a stopper for you.

@ Hans,
Its true that the Canon 1.4x extender has this tube like thing that will prevent that a Sigma8 lens can be mounted but the one from Kenko seems to be free of this obstacle and it is also better priced while user reviews are very positive.

@ Ad Bo,
If you are willing to accept a small decrease in quality compared to the Tokina 10-17 lens and If you use other lenses on your camera as well (to spread the risk of being unhappy for use with the Sigma8) for this price of the Kenko converter you almost can't go wrong. So perhaps you should give it a try (after verification that the Sigma8 lens indeed will fit). If you buy the converter I hope you are willing to post a comparison between a pano with and without the converter.

Will
Extenders are not at all supposed to be used on short lenses. Even with a 50mm the quality of the Kenko is very bad.
Extenders are supposed to be used with teles.
The Canon is better because of the construction and maybe used also with a 50mm forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1029&me...
Using a fisheye with and extender No way I guess.

Hello Hans,
I guess my update of my posting and your reply crossed I know that for sure there is a risk that this extender will not work at all or with a poor result so therefore buying this extender is only advisible if it can and will be used on other (tele) lenses as well.

Here is a guy who actually tried it with a Peleng.
If you use f16 you might get the same quality as cropping the original 8mm shots. www.pbase.com/dougsmit/image/70731599/original
