Car panos ,suggestions

Well pano friends,

One of my clients wants car panos both interior and exterior.

I went through many posts and discussions in this forum and got some basic ideas on how to go about it.

And it is my first assignment on cars so i need little more clarifications so I request the gurus to provide some hints.

First do we need to shoot only in a controlled lighting environment like a big studio with sufficient soft boxes etc.,
or can we try out doors for both interiors and exteriors (exterior is going to be the object movie)

The client has the following links as reference links ,saying this is what he expects.

www.hondacarindia.com/city/360Degree/car_360.html

www.acura.com/InteractiveShowRoom.aspx?model=RDX#...

and in our place we don't have such big studios to accommodate a car. so how to achieve this type of panos and object movies.

I have a Manfrotto tripod with a center column of length about 14 to 15 inches, and both 10.5mm nikon and 8mm sigma

my main issue is, can we shoot the car object movie and pano in some out door and can we change to white background as in the above links. or is it a must to have a big studio and the turn table of that size?

Any ideas , thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

Sounds like you have your work cut out for you!
If this was me, the amount of effort I would spend on the project would depend on how much the client is paying. If he's paying enough, I would hire a car-studio and lighting for a day and do a pro job.
Failing that, I would consider the following:
Exterior. No turntable needed, long piece of string tied to a peg in the ground, walk around the circle and mark 36 equidistant points along the circumference with spray-paint/rocks/coins.
Park the car on the peg position. Cloudy day otherwise you'll have endless reflection probs. Can you get your hands on a large green background on wheeled stands? Makes image extraction and placing on custom background easier during post processing. Level ground, tripod at fixed height for all shots. Aim at same imaginary position in centre of car for each shot.

Interior. Cloudy day for soft light. Bracket shots otherwise you might end up with dark corners. Turn the ignition so all the colourful dashboard lights light up, including radio etc. Cover the windows with bed sheets, for softer light. It will mean slow shutter speeds. Sturdy tripod. Also means less editing of windows afterwards. Using the pole horizontally through the passenger/driver window, so the window becomes the "nadir" Few posts on this on panoguide. Put a few small pieces of coloured tape on the ceiling to assist in control points. Can be cloned out easily in final equi image.

Good luck, please post your results for us to see!

If the ceiling happens to be the 'felt / cloth' type, pick up some map pins from the stationery store. They're small and easy to work with.
