Monetize you panoramic images

Wanted to start a new thread on this subject.
This idea came out of Doug's new business venture of selling panoramic images.
Many of the best panoramic photographers are on here.
Together you have 'probably the best panoramic images in the world' (excuse the Danish pun).
Instead of trying to individually set up a little business selling your own limited, but for sure fantastic, panoramic images why don't you pool all your images in one business and let one person manage the business and sell your images?
One fantastic website with a massive stock of the world's best panoramic images.
One small investment building a website plus SEO to get the traffic should do it. Probably not viable for an individual photographer from an investment and management point of view. This model provides you with minimal investment if any and maximum return.
People want choice. How about the world's largest online panoramic image store? The website with the world's best images in any size you want.
Each 'supplier' will have a link on their website which will in itself create traffic and sales.
Think big, sit back and receive your royalties.
There's obviously a lot to sort out but it's not rocket science. As for website and SEO that's something I can easily sort out as many of my business advisory clients use these services.
However, before I go any further I would need to gauge the interest from members on here.
Just to repeat. Under some model you will
1) Allow a new website to sell your images in different sizes 2) The images will obviously be viewable on the viewsite 3) The high resolution images will reside in a database for quick access and printing 4) Buyers will be able to buy the images online 5) Print and shipping will be outsourced 6) Copy right as you like
Please let me know on here or message if you are interested in PRINCIPLE subject to further information.
If you're interested then please let me know and also let me know how many panoramic images you think would be worthy of being sold on the website.

Jorgen You're re-inventing the wheel
TTurner already ponted out an affordable way to have standard size poster/prints made; hundreds of Costco stores in the USA
And the best way to sell them online would be eBay, Amazon or AllPosters.com. I think there are a couple other poster/art print websites, too
You just have to have posters with images people will pay for.

but Doug,
not everbody
1) live in the USA 2) wants to sell online for just a few images and deal with all the associated logistics, enquiries, paypal accounting etc. etc. I believe they prefer to take fantastic images 3) wants to deal with printing and distribution 4) and (fill in as you please) 5) and (fill in as you please) 6) and (fill in as you please)
Economies of scale, best choice and serious distribution will play a major role here.
So can I count you out or would you be interested in selling your pano images on the website?
Jorgen

Jorgen On Allposters.com there are 27,000+ posters in the "Panoramic Photgraphy" catagory.
If some one actually wants to sell some panoramic posters, its where I'd want to be, because its were the buyers are likely to go...where the biggest selection is

My mistake, they only have 12,000+ posters or prints with another 15,000 pre-framed choices
allposters.com/gallery.asp?startat=/getthumb.asp&search=84752&c=c&aid=868714434&tid1=50
But 12,000 posters or prints is way more than we could put togeter

Doug, a question and a remark.
question: how does one submit its work on allposter?
remark: it's not because there is already a car shop in town that there cannot be a second one.

erik I don't know, but I'm looking into how to get a poster or panorama on AllPosters.com
second car shop: www.Art.com a search for "panormaic photography" = 33,000 results
third: ebay
fourth: amazon
I'm thinking there are enough car shops in town. What do you think?
What's encouraging to me is that there are very few "Albuquerque" themed posters & prints other than tone of hot air balloon posters. The Sunset from the top of the mountain would have little competition. Also nothing like the aerial (birds eye view) shot I have in mind.
I doubt there's much demand for an "Albuquerque" poster in New York, LA, London, etc, but locally is another matter. So I'm not sure having my work on AllPosters.com or Art.com would have much real benefit
Before Jorgen starts setting up a panoramic poster website he may want to check out the competiton; both websites and the posters a lot of our members would simply be duplicating.

Well, I think selling pictures is about a bit more then just posters.
In fact Jorgen didn't even mention the word and I appreciate his idea very much.
Nonetheless he really isn't the first one who came up with this idea. So if you think your panoramic pictures are worth selling or if you would like to support photographers sell their pictures I highly encourage you to contact Tamas Varga from www.worldpanoramastock.com/index.php
Cheers Jürgen

If we talk about selling posters to private people you can forget it.
Selling panoramic images for different uses is another thing and as Juergen mentioned we have Tamas site for that.
Posters as in Allposters.com can never be a business for a small area as panoramic images. If you look at the prices they are selling them for you understand why. $10-20 for a poster in 157 x 53 cm And those prices are the ones people are prepared to give you.
How much profit for the photographer and the seller can you get from that.

Hans I've already sold a few panoramic posters to people. The problem was the 8.3"x 23.4" size that Epson used to make only justified a $15 price which was too small to justify having an inexpensive custom frame made for. The really basic frame I had made was almost $60
That's why I've had glossy photo paper cut to fit a 11.75" x 36" frame I can buy for $10 at WalMart and less on the Internet if I order 10 or more.
You're right about "panoramic posters" being a very small market, which is why the Sunest poster will be a more traditional 13" x 19" which inexpensive stock frames are available too
It all depends how many posters I can sell wholesale for a $10 profit on each one, combined with how many I can sell directly for $20 profit on each one. If I can sell 10 a month wholesale and 10 a month retail/directly, that's $300 profit a month for one poster. Add the 3 sports venues and another I want to do from an airplane and I could be making $750 to $1000 a month.
I've even though of sizing down the Sunset and other Albuquerque scenes I have planned and selling them as Wallpaper on VirtualAlbuquerque for $1 each or give them away as an advertising tool with the web address in the corner.
Hans, your thinking is just too narrow and limiting sometimes
I just read an article in Wired magazine about the first computer programmer who, in the early days of computers, used what was then a massive amount of the very limited memory to for what they called "cartoons" on the screen. The cartoons became icons, windows and pointers and became the MAC OS.
As the cost of high quality wide carriage printers goes down, small runs of posters becomes more and more practical, lowers the cost of the posters (panoramic or traditional aspect) and makes selling them at $10 to $20 a profitable enterprise.
Its just like Moore's Law

Jorgen,
It is past when masses of family homes were decorated with wall to wall sunny beach posters. The golden days of the brick and mortar poster shops are over therefore the online service is feasible, but do not expect much...
According to my experience private customers can not afford to pay the cost of an individual print (incl. usage fee, printing, packaging and posting).
Corporate clients can and at World Panorama Stock we had several of them. Though they do not knock on the door every other day. And you need to have the highest possible resolution image since they need five to ten meters wide prints like these: www.panograph.hu/dtz_big2.htm
Before you invest into this kind of venture you'd better make a market research and check the trends. Though Google Insight for Search is in beta, but may help: * www.google.com/insights/search/#q=panoramic%20pri...
I hope it helps My best Tamas

A Gallery in Bath is selling my panoramic based photographs of the City.
I'm lucky because this is a culturally aware place with lots of rich residents and tourists.
They sell for 120 pounds: 40 for the frame, 40 for the Gallery and the rest for me.
It beats internet selling

Hi Doug
I'm using a Canon 9000. As I said, I'm producing panorama based photographs, so I don't need to go above A3.
In the early days I used a commercial art-print company, but they were expensive (15 pounds) and I wasn't happy with the results.
Doing it here means I can spend a long time tweaking the photograph - perhaps 10 prints - but once it's right you've got it for good.
Paper and ink costs about 2 pounds.
Regards,
John

John So you're printing just a little smaller than 13x19 like I'm planning?
Is there a sample online somewhere?
I'm curious what subjects and styles you're having sucess selling
