"If money were no object" we would not be dreaming, yearning for dream setups anymore we would simply get it.
The most expensive camera & best of the best lens will not make anyone good with virtual tours. There is a road ahead to follow even after buying the dream setups. Imagination combined by technical expertise is the key ingredient to be able to create those eye drooling virtual tours.
Search the forum & read few post regarding equipment you will find tons of information.

A dream setup will include the photographer as well. Hire one of the experts in the forum to take the VR for you.

The question is about equipment, not experience level. I was also guilty at first making an ASSUMPTION that this person is just starting out. He may very well be the best photographer on this planet. He may have been doing panos for years. Judging by his handle, I kind of doubt it, though. He wants to know what the dream setup would be. Lots of opinions out there. Let's here them.
I for one am very happy with my Nikon D300, Nikon 10.5 lens, any pano head from Nodal Ninja and my Manfrotto tripod. To throw more money at my setup would be a waste of money. I would rather get better at what I have now instead of relying on technology to make me better.

We all have to start someday somewhere that is not a problem at all, when I answer I should try to navigate & correct the fact assumed in the question.
The question assumes that there is a dream set up in existence there is none, instead there are many "ideal setup of equipment" which depends upon the kind of panos he wants to do & he has not yet mentioned that, he may be or may not be aware that there are different kind of panos in existence hence I requested him to read the forums here, it has tons of info & huge pool of members ready to help him.

Yes I am new and I appreciate those who can help me start in the right direction. I asked this questions because I get conflicting answers. My wife is the real photographer and she want's to start doing virtual 360 tours for real estate agents.
I want to surprise her with the equipment for her birthday but we both do not know what is required. She shoots with a nikon d90.
From reading i think the following might work.
Ninja Nodal PTGUI CS4
Would I need anything else?
And as I agree that talent is most important, equipment cannot be fully discounted.

Add a Sigma 8mm F3.5 EX DG Circular Fisheye, a sturdy tripod and a remote for camera (Preferable on wire or on RF)

I would add an EZ-Leveller 2 to Dorin's list. I use one and find it really makes levelling a lot easier, and quicker.

If he goes for PTGui ,as he mentioned, i feel there is no need of EZ-Leveller2, PtGui docs says there is no need of leveling any more and SW stitch well with non leveled source images also.
This is what I came to know when I bought my PTGui pro 8.2 version but yet to test on that aspect

Ken
There is no need for exact leveling when shooting the pano as levelling the pano in PTGui Pro or Standard is a very simple and fast thing to do using vertical points. Actually in most cases it is faster than leveling the tripod.
There are however 2 cases when levelling the tripod /panohead is adviceable. 1. If the panorama has no vertical lines at all which can be used. 2. If you want to do template stitching without using controlpoints.
Best and easiest way to level the tripod is adjusting the legs. With most tripods it is just as fast as using a leveller below the head.
