photoshop CS4 is not a dedicated stitching software, it can do many things but still cant stitch many other kind of images perfectly.
You may look at Ptgui based on panotools (the father of all panoramic software) www.ptgui.com
autopano pro & autopano giga www.autopano.net/en/

I'll take note of those. How do they compare to CS3 for recolouring, levels, hue/saturation and sharpening?
If a pano has been stitched using these, can they be edited afterwards using CS3?
I'm told the panos sharpness can be affected by the software. How do these two compare?
From what I read, the PTGui does make some sort of RAW images, but if you could tell me more, I'd appreciate it. Would they still have 22,000 different colour levels?
Regards,
Fergal.

Yes, you can edit the image after stitching.

I read this www.ptgui.com/support.html#2_6 16 bits are 2^16 colors, so 65536 colors

PTGui is one of the best commercial stitching SW and Hugin is the best open source free stitching SW. I started with Hugin and switched over to PTgui pro recently.
APP and PT assembler are seems to be good, but I have no experience about them.
Comparing PS CS3 and PTGui is not a right thing to do, PS is for image editing with photo stitching as one of its feature with limited facilities where as PTGui is dedicated stitching tool with little image enhancing facility . PT gui supports all colours (your 22000 and more) 8bit, 16bit and HDR formats for plenty of colour and range.
As a panographer you need both and as a photographer PS is enough.

I tried PTGui. To be honest, I found the CS3 did the job just as well, better in some cases.

I would say that if you are getting better stitvhing results with CS3 than PTGui, you are not using PT properly. I have not tried CS3 for this function, but have seen some of Adobe's results. They are vastly inferior to other programs on the market. Sesite the program being superb in most fields, it nevertheless is vastly inferior to dedicated stitching programs.
I take it you have a trial copy of PT . . . keep playing with it and read the pages of this forum for some expert help!

In that case I suspect you have done something wrong. PTGui is the stitcher of choice by most members of this forum although some use other stitchers but I've never heard any of our members say they use PS.
I use Autopano Pro. It is possibly the easiest to master , intuitive and powerful but not the fastest to run. You can get a free trial at
www.autopano.net/en/

PTgui is the best. Period.
Anyone who wants to state differently, is not being honest at all.
Unless one wants NO control of what is being done... one can use Autopano, which is also based on the same underlying technology used in PTgui.
Adobe CS3 and CS4 as stitchers... well, yes, these can be used, but FAR from being good enough. I have tried those out, and won't waste more time for now.
If you use PTgui, you should also get yourself the smartblend plugin, which is an amazing little plugin, fixing the unfixable.

Not true.
which is also based on the same underlying technology used in PTgui. Not true.
You may be very familiar with PTGui but you are obviously very ill-informed about Autopano Pro/Giga.

Whoops... ok, not the first (nor the last) time I would be wrong.
I'm probably mixing up things up from hearsay... The only 2 stitching programs I have USED, are PTgui and Realviz Stitcher, that I ditched after I found out how much better PTgui was. I have tried a demo of AutoKolor (or some such name) and didn't like it (didn't try it out for more than a couple of panos, and the stitching was simply not good enough.
Sorry for spreading incorrect information... based on my very little knowledge. It was not intentional to mis-inform anyone.
Now I wonder where I read about autopano being based on the same core engine as PTgui.

I think Autopano is based on Autostitch, an experimental programme developed by Matthew Brown at British Columbia University. Five or six years ago, when I started, I had just a point-and-shoot camera and needed up to 60 shots for a fully immersive. Only Autostitch which was\is completely automatic made it possible for me to stitch so many images in so many bands. (Automatic stitching by PTGui came much later I believe).
If you are interested in Autostitch it is still available as a free download from, www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html but it won't compare favourably with modern stitchers such as PTGui and Autopano. It had no real blender such as Smartblend used with PTGui and Autopano. It also had a rather nasty habit of truncating a panorama if sufficient control points between images weren't found, and there was nothing one could do about it. You can imagine how frustrating that was.
As to asking which is the better stitcher, PTGui or Autopano Pro, it's a bit like asking on this forum which is the better SLR brand for panorama, Canon or Nikon? They are both wonderful cameras and the answer depends to a great extent on personal loyalty and what you are used to!

Update on my bad habit of commenting on things I don't know enough about.
I checked in my folder of programs, and there I have the old Autostitch program License dated 4.4.2005. It could very well have contributed to my confusion.... "same" name category...
I downloaded a trial of Autopano Giga, and hat is clearly NOT something I have tried earlier. It has control points and a whole lot more that probably help making it a very good stitcher.
So again; sincere apologies to anyone who read my initial post, which is not based on facts.
Of course I stand by PTgui as my favorite choice, but having had a few minute's look at Autopano, I have to say that it looks like a good candidate for stitching.
