The answer to the missing link is the photographer.
Just like buying a Dallas Cowboys football jersey won't make you a football player, buying photography equipment won't make you a photographer. It's a skill that has to be learned over time and you can begin by taking an intro to photography class at a local college. After you learn the basics and begin to grow, all your questions will be answered.

Will is one of our most talented VR Photographers. Like almost all good VR Photographers he has a background as a commercial photographer for 10 years or more.
If you want to do superior VR Photo you have to learn the basics in photography. If you are talented that can be done in a couple of years but the experience that makes you the best takes many years more. Then you can start learning the tech for VR Photo.
The actual equipment used is not that important as long as you know the basics for it.

If you right click on the vr image, you will see that it is made with Flash Panorama Player (there a quite a few FPP users around here): flashpanoramas.com/player/ Other tour creation methods/programs are Pano2VR: gardengnomesoftware.com/ or KR Pano: krpano.com/ I would say that the easiest to learn of these would be Pano2VR, though others may offer differing opinions.
For taking the actual images, would depend on the camera/lens how many shots would be required. i.e. on my old set up with my 18-55 lens on my 400d camera, I would need to take 32 images to cover the full sphere, with my new sigma 8mm lens, I need to take 4 images to cover the same. If a Panoramic head for the tripod is used when taking the photographs, paralax errors between near and far objects in the scene can be eliminated. Nodal Ninja: www.nodalninja.com/ has a range of affordable heads (and very good customer support, both before and after sales). Check what version would be best for your equipment.
You would then need to edit those images with a image program, photoshop seems to be the prefered, though others can be used. The images would then need to be stitched (PTGui is good: www.ptgui.com/ )
So, there is quite a lot goes into making VR Tours and the best are made by those who are best at taking the photographs and using the software. These things can be learned though.
